Chena River Flood Declaration - Fairbanks Alaska

Houston, we've got a problem.

It's official. We're a disaster area. The Fairbanks North Star Borough issued a disaster deceleration this morning. Citing damage to more than 500 homes, the Borough Assembly has requested emergency assistance from Governor Palin. The last time the Tanana River was this high was during the disastrous 1967 flood that devastated Fairbanks.

The resolution says "substantial damage is occurring due to high water and river current on the Tanana River, the Salcha River and the Chena River, resulting in damage to over 500 private residences with an estimated 1,000 inhabitants and to the road networks" maintained by the borough and the state.

They ain't just whistling Dixie folks. The creek is still rising. There are reports of heavy flooding in Salcha, some areas of North Pole, as well as Chena Pump Road and the lower Rosie Creek area. Although forecasters are saying the Chena and Tanana Rivers have crested, many folks who live along the river are saying just the opposite.

Several area roads remain impassable due to the flooding and it was announced this morning that the Alaska Railroad has canceled it's passenger service into and out of Fairbanks for the second straight day. Various areas were reported without power although Golden Valley is hard at work getting those folks back online.

Jesse, in addition to the high water and damage from the river current, never ending rain has got to be a bummer on the mindset in buying and selling homes. No one wants to get out in the muck. When people have no power, other things obviously are on their mind. Hang in there.

We were in Fairbanks three weeks ago and visited many houses where people had inflated idea of their home's value.  May they awake and lower their prices.  Then we will buy another home in fairbanks.

Gosh Jesse, I did not know this was happening. But then, when one does not listen to the radio or TV to hear what the lliberal left media has to say...

Kevin - Thanks...

Jer - It happened fairly quickly... after 3 weeks of rain.

Gary - I can't figure out if I feel like mushroom or a duck. haha.  The rain slowed a little today but it's still falling.

Susan - We're on high ground but there are a lot of folks who aren't... and they're in trouble!

Richard - The last one we had was in '67 and without the flood control project we would have already had a repeat.

Mel - Thanks... How's the Botting household doing?

Don - Yes, you do.  I'm hoping the river crests soon.

David - Thanks for chiming in.  There are a lot of good values to be had.  Best of luck in finding a new home.

Mark - Thanks... good to see you, btw.

Michael - haha.. I understand.

Leesa
- Thanks... and I will definitely do that!

Jessie, I sure am sorry for the people that have lost homes.  Hopefully, the creeks won't rise anymore.  One of the things I like about AR is that it make the news much more "personal" when you hear about things that are happening around people that you've come to know and respect.

I was curious, are there always trees at the dam or is that result of flooding also.  I sure wish we could have some of your water here in Texas.  But, since we were not able to get the MO flood water here...I doubt that we will figure out how to get your water here.   Wishful thinking....

In all seriousness, you all are in my prayers.

I've got room for you and Kathy if you guys are looking for hot and humid weather!  It's only 105 degrees in DFW today.

In all seriousness, last year we had so much rain that most of our lakes were closed long after the rain ended.  Hot, muggy weather and not being allowed to take the boat out is the fastest way to irritate Texans for sure.  Hang in there, buddy.  :)

Lori - Thanks... we stayed high and dry but there were a lot of folks affected.  Now that the waters have gone down a bit the clean up is underway.

Sondra - You're absolutely correct... it does make it more personal this way and I think that's a good thing.  The log jam is from the flooding.  All the felled trees on the riverbanks and driftwood have washed downstream.

Amanda - Alright... we're headed your way.  105 and I can promise you the margaritas will be flowing.  I always thought slow moving pedestrians irritated Texans... or is that just Big Daddy? :)

Debbie - There must have been some magic floating around. I think Palin authorized using some of the state's disaster funds for clean up... tho I don't know how much. I haven't read her press release.
