The main name for the site is important. but it is not the only thing. the whole URL is just as important
If you have a domain name and it currently has a google PR of at least 1 and has been around for over a couple of years, keep it.
You can get around the issue of keywords getting indexed by using page names and your sites directories to achieve great results.
I have a couple of articles that i just posted on my blog about this very topic.
but in a nutshell if you want to do well for a specific search team, name that page the name of the search term.
here are 2 examples. I must mention these are sites that i provide all the services for so i have full control over all aspects of the site. some of these tricks may or may not be able to be done by your provider.
for the search term Burlington Vermont homes for sale, the #1 site is Burlingtonvemonthomes.com it makes since that the domain name and the search terms match, that it will rank high if all the content related information is done correctly. but is also #1 for all real estate related searches in Google.
now an example of a site with a name that is not great but still does well. www.realesearch.com It does have at least real in the name. but an area the client wanted to do well in, is a region made up of 34 small towns and is on the boarder of 2 states! The locals call it the upper valley. so doing well
for upper valley real estate for sale was important and it is #1 in Google .
the whole url is www.realesearch.com/upper_valley_real_estate.php
So don't panic if your domain name is not perfect, just make adjustments to the page names and provide really good and original information on the page and google will love it.
Also when creating links to your site use the search term and link directly to the page in the site not the home page. Just like i did above.
if you have a sitemap file that you upload to google and yahoo be sure to raise its priority to 0.9 so the SE know this an important page.
