I received an email quite a few months ago. It was from a teenager who was wondering what it would take to become a home-buyer. I sent a reply ... it took just a few minutes. It could have been titled "Baby Steps to Home Ownership." It was what she requested. The first step involved building credit.

She thanked me, saying mine was the only reply. I put her information into my calendar and checked up with her every once in a while.

To my surprise she had actually followed my advice.

Today I received a referral from a referral that was a referral from one of her referrals.

Confusing?

She's living in her home... a home she owns. Everyone she meets gets to hear about me. Even the friend of the friend of the friend of the friend.

I've told her she should be in the publicity business. Her enthusiasm is unstoppable. I asked her where she gets the positive outlook.

She said, "one day it clicked."

"annnnnnnnnd?" I replied. (yes... I have to know the rest of the story.)

She said, "It's not earth shattering. I just realized my life is up to me. I was tired of standing on the fence and watching everyone else make the first move. I decided I'd be the first of my friends to get a solid job... the first to buy a home. Then I decided it didn't matter to be first... it just mattered to do the things I wanted to do. And... sooner the better."

It has clicked with me also. In this market she's the brightly burning bulb. I decided to flip the switch as well.

For anyone who has a laundry list of reasons why things shouldn't work I offer this. It's working for someone.

I know- because I've seen it.

Chuck,
What a wonderful story.  Too bad more people leave the switch in the "off" position for much too long waiting for the "when this or that happens".

Timely Post Chuck in the shadows of Randy Pausch and his "Last Lecture" at Carnegie Mellon - an individual who was given a death sentence (terminal cancer), yet he embraced the situation and choose to make a difference for himself, his family, his friends and perhaps the world.  He could have so easily sunk into depression or other negative means of dealing with his problems.  Instead he embarked on a journey to leave an imprint of inspiration and motivation for all who cared to embrace his "last lecture."

Here's to turning on the switch - you never know who you'll affect by doing so.

Cynthia- I've noticed that a few people are jumping off the fence these days. Some are saying, "I give up" ... while others are starting to make hay. It's really a strange/odd/wonderful time we're in.

Pamela- I saw the segment the other night (with Diane Sawyer... can't remember the show title). It was just awesome. He certainly chose his attitude and it helped more than just him. Excellent example.

Chuck~You rock at referrals!  This is not the first post I've read about your referrals so you are obviously doing something right!

I think my mind is full of little tiny light bulbs that click on from time to time, so it's hard to think of one huge one like your client!  I think she is much smarter to just click a big switch and get it over with! ; )

The old classic tale of never judge a book by its cover that goes hand in hand with never turn down a client qualified or not qualified, may not qualify now but can qualify down the road later or like your posted pointed out give possible referrals.  The sea is endless, never stop reeling in.

Pam- This was a one in a million client. I love it when I learn a few tips from the people I'm helping.

Justin- I have to admit... I didn't expect much from this email. But wow... I'm glad I responded.

Debi- I'm amazed too. I'm guessing the others saw this as a "low odds" lead.

Georgina- Yes... people like her give me a lot of confidence in the future. The go-getters are out there.

April- It's amazing to me how deep a referral can go.
