Did they drill a hole through a live tree??  About the only thing I think I can read is 25 feet, I'm assuming that is how wide it is???  That is an AMAZING picture Robert!!

Amazing! 2400 years?  Is that a real estimate of its age?

Yes, it may be older by now. This park with the hole through the tree must be at least 50 years old. People do not allow this type of cutting a hole through a Redwood or any tree for that matter.

I did a post on the Bristle-cone Pine tree one month ago. And this Bristle-cone Pine tree is the oldest living thing on Earth and dates back approx 4,777 years. Located in Big Pine, California.

Look for my other post under trees, nature or unbelievable. And thanks for the comment!

Hi Robert, I'm playing catch up.  Gotta remind myself of the groups that you suggested also.  It is amazing that the tree is so big and healthy that it can survive with the hole.  I've never been to the Redwood Forests yet....  I'll have to find your old tree posts later.

By the way, thanks for sharing this picture with us anyway.  In the total scheme of things, points are only points.  And who knows, you may eventually end up with enough comments that you may get some points.

Someday I'll get a photo of that tree while it's still standing.

Will be in the redwoods for almost a week, about mid-August 2008.

Am mainly interested in the largest ones that don't have holes cut in them:

Grove of Titans & Atlas Grove: Largest Known Redwoods

I'm particularly interested in photos of one called Fusion Giant, and some video of the groves holding Atlas Tree and Lost Monarch.

Stay tuned.

If you find anything big or unusual off-trail, please chime-in.

I have visited the Grove of Titans and I want to thank you for the web site information, it's great! And have a wonderful time on your trip to the Redwoods.

I have been going to visit the Redwoods trees since 1974 and there is something about them that keeps me coming back. In may of this year I pitched a tent for 2-3 days right underneath these huge, huge Redwoods in Humboldt County.

Have fun and check out some of my older blogs, because I have Redwood pics in these blogs also.

Harrison - Some people have never seen the Redwoods in California, and I really think they should. You know what I mean?

Thanks for the comment and I try to go see my big friends at least once per year.

We still have a house for sale in southern Oregon, and keeping it in shape will give me an excuse to go down to the redwoods at least once more this October, or so.

If it sells, I'll be glad to drive down to sign papers. To see the redwoods of course.

Later - hope to get down twice per year minimum.

By the way, believe I found the Fusion Giant. If not, then one that easily fits the name, girth and height, with a long fusion line up the trunk.

Cheers,

Bob - The very first time I saw the California Redwoods and walked along the trails between them was back in 1974 when I was a teenager. Since then I have been drawn to visit them by a force of their own.

These trees are one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen and should be a must see on any ones list of things do do in their lives. If you ever happen to visit my friends, send me a line and let me know what you thought.

R. Swetz ...

If I'm reading and tracking my online postings right, I think I found the Fusion Giant, and found it after your reply date above.

I'd prefer not to write where I saw it, on this page here.

Email me - and in the email, note your name and the link to this page so I'll know who I"m responding too. Because my replies are tight-lipped in most cases.

I don't think it's an ordeal for this tree to be known to a few people. But I don't want to leave a permanent record online.

The tree I found - couldn't measure the height - had a long veritical fusion mark going way up the trunk. This was in Redwoods National Park. The diameter was over 23' which is almost exactly right for Fusion Giant.

A park employee at the Crescent City information center said I would never see the tree, when I said I was going to Tall Trees Grove to look for it.

What caught my attention, was that she didn't correct me bringing up a "Fusion Giant" as a second largest redwood. That implies that my guess may be correct.

Maybe she thought I'd be looking in the lowland where many Titans are. But I was looking everywhere, and found the tree several hundred feet up on a steep hillside with no creek near it.

It's in my album #2 and #3. Here's that page again:

http://www.mdvaden.com/grove_of_titans.shtml

I made a change to my albums. The default enlargement for the slideshow in album #2 was quite large. So I made album #3, with decent size, but smaller default enlargement sizes. The album links are on that page.

The tree on the hill was easily big enough to be that tree. If not, it's a titan. Otherwise, I found a second one down in the main grove, with a similar size trunk, a small car size burl on the base, and what could possibly be construed as some trunk fusion up above. It's in the photos too, although it was pretty dark under the tree.

Cheers,

M. D. Vaden of Oregon

Update on redwood talk.

If you were ever curiious about what Hyperion might look like, take another visit to the redwoood page and albums.

Album numbers of earlier replies shifted a bit. But there are captions.
