Facts About Web 2.0 and Opportunities In Social Networking To Grow Your Business

Here are some interesting facts you will be interested in about the Internet and Web 2.0 and Social Networking. If you are not on page one of Google search results pages for your keywords that you have researched you can be sure to get there through social networking. Some of these sites will have no follow link backs to your website and blog and some do allow follow links. But they all have amazing ways for you to network and increase your SOI.

There are over 1920 sites on the Internet that are considered to be Web 2.0 sites, social networking or bookmarking sites. That is an amazing number of sites. I am talking about sites like Myspace and Facebook which are the most well known of these sites.

But did you know that in Europe over 63% of the social networking is done on a site called, Bebo? If you want to do business with folks oversees in Europe this may just be the right venue for you.

In South America and Asia, there is a site called Orkut that is very popular. ( owned by Google)

  • You Tube has as many page views as Google does now. You Tube doubles in size every 6 months. It is growing exponentially.

  • MySpace had more page views than Google did in 2007. MySpace has 45 BILLION page views per month, 185 Million users.

  • FaceBook gets as many page views as Google does right now. FaceBook, MSN, Google and Ebay have under 15 Billion page views monthly.
  • FaceBook is the 4th most trafficked site in the world.
  • Yahoo has 35 Billion page views per month.

So if you are having too much competition to get to the #1 spot on Google's search pages you may want to invest some time building a presence on these powerful social sites.

Don't despair when your mind conjures up all these teeny boppers on MySpace and FaceBook. Check out these statistics:

  • The average income of people on FaceBook is $100,000 to $125,000. Not exactly allowance money for most teens.

  • One half of all MySpace users are over the age of 35.

  • One half of all the FaceBook users are over the age of 35.

  • On FaceBook, the average user age is fast becoming 64 years old and make $100,000 a year. So don't think baby boomers are not in the know.

So if you are not the king of the hill of Google; there is more to the Internet than just Google. It's not all about Google. There are hundreds of search engines, the big ones being Yahoo and MSN. There are many other ones as well. If you already dominate Google than you can easily dominate the other search engines too.

You can go to these Web 2.0 sites and build back links to your website and your blog and the more that you do that, you will eventually see yourself climbing the ranks on Google too.

And my favorite Web 2.0 Site is none other than Active Rain, for real estate professionals.

Interesting research... which ones are going to give us the best links while we build our network?

Hi Katerina,

That's remarkable.  I had no idea.  I'm finally comfortable with Active Rain.  I just don't know if I have time to look into all these other options.  But thanks for the very interesting statistics.  Definitely something to ponder.

Best regards,

Bruce

Mmmmmm.  I believe that all Maryland and Virginia real estate practitioners should stick to FaceBook for their web marketing.  Except for me.

Katerina,  Very interesting facts.  I used to use Bebo, but on too many occasions was being contacted with spam, so I've recently decided to forego it.  I agree with you on ActiveRain, but also like to work in some other social networks as well.

The growth of Web 2.0 is stagering. I am not sure if a single person could even keep up a presence on most of these networks. I notice now that kids are going to YouTube first thing when they get on the web...

That's great info to know.  I've been having a hard time with google.  Do you have a post about backlinking?  I've unsure about how that works!  Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Katerina - Seems to be a glitch in the Facebook stats.  "On FaceBook, the average user age is 64 years old and makes $100,000 a year." That doesn't sound right when paired up with "One half of all the FaceBook users are over the age of 35." What is the source of these statistics?

John- YEP, TYPO! Sorry! I guess I should proofread before 2 a.m. !

I went back to change the error:

The FASTEST growing average age group joining Facebook now is 65 years old and makes at least 100 K a year.

When I read the post this morning, I noticed the contradiction! Sorry about that!

Great Information!

I love myspace and facebook. It's a lot of fun.  I joined myspace for family and I have a lot of contacts that are my daughters age- 20-28ish and I joined facebook for business contacts.  I have set up a referral network with Realtors and CRS agents all over the US.  Plus, its fun to send someone a virtual martini afterwork!

Katerina - The typos always strike me late at night, too! That's a very important distinction about seniors, especially for agents in retirement destinations and second home or vacation markets. Facebook has a lot broader demographic than most people realize. The agents who recognize this will be able to target their content accordingly and be successful.

Not Yet Licensed- I know! It is so hard to manage it all. I think Jason just sits at his computer all day long and all night long, takes a ride on his bike with his son, goes swimming with him, plays with the kids, then gets back online again! :) In his spare time he shows houses and runs his real estate company:)

Paul- I will write a post about that. The great part of those sites is not so much the links which can be powerful but more than that you can create groups in these sites and develop very targeted niches. I will explain in a post later. Maybe next week. I have to get my localism smashing by the land rush time so I am fevereshly blogging about our town. :)

John- For markets like Las Vegas and Florida and Arizona, this is a huge fact we need to pay attention too! I am not doing nearly all that I could do to harness the power of Facebook! But then again, it is hard to take time off of Active Rain when it generates 2 listings a week and great agents for my coaching practise. But I could make like a goal of 15 minutes a week to start. Just a tiny bite at a time. There is also alot my assistants can do. They do all my back ups of my blog, enter the listings in point 2, and set up my profiles on Facebook and others. I also have some auto software that will auto input all my info in contact forms and profile forms. I just got a software program that will upload to all the sites a snippet or whatever so I don't have to rush around from site to site. I have not learned to use it yet. If I like it, I will post about it. If it is garbage, I won't.

Bruce- Stay on Active Rain. You are too new to spread youself around yet. This is for people who are already on AR for a long time, created their system, and now can add some new stuff and also for those that have too much competition in their city on AR. This is a way they can get on top.

Hi Katerina,

Your last sentence caught my eye.  My apologies for changing the topic, but do you have a post I can read that explains the benefits of Localism?  The reason I came to Active Rain is because I was finding listings posted on AR that were coming up highly ranked on the search engines.  I'm not seeing that with Localism posts.  Am I searching for the wrong things?  Or is Localism something that you're investing time into, now, in hopes of capturing future results?

When you write local content for your area those should show up on google with localism as the 'author' so to speak.

I will write a post later on more about it once this new localism has bugs worked out. You will get amazing link backs from Localism.
