Ive seen this on the news recently and Ive got an online article about Granite countertops emitting Radon posing a possible health risk to homeowners. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking) and supposedly some granite countertops has been tested positive emitting some levels of radon. But evidently these concerns are nothing new and have been in the news before. Here’s the article at

Hi Stephen,

We have naturally occurring granite rock with slate between it here in New Brunswick and many mining companies are excavating it for kitchen countertops.  Didn't know about the Radon gas...  Now, I will be more informed on it, THANKS!!!

Stephen.. Thanks for posting this blog.  It gives me something to think about.  Most of my clients do Raon tests because of gases in rocks under the basement.  Never would have thought of granite counter tops as an issue, but I can see where there would be concern... and nothing more.  Most granite countertops are in kitchens where there are doors and windows, so the gases would not be staying in the room.
