If you enjoy the great outdoors, then you are going to have a great time if you get a chance to come and visit Stoddard, Wisconsin. It is located right along the edge of the Mississippi River only 10 miles south of LaCrosse, WI. From this little village, with a population of only 815, you can look clear across the river at one of its widest places and see Iowa's wooded bluffs. The area offers up some excellent boating, hunting and fishing. No matter which season, there is always something going on that centers around activities out on the river. In winter, it's ice fishing and snowmobiling. Springtime brings walleye fishing, while the summer is filled with boating and jet skiing. Finally in fall, there is always more fishing but there is hunting too. It is either for duck's or out in the woods for Deer. Stoddard is a year round outdoors' sportsman's paradise.
I think of the most interesting streets in this town is Pearl Street. The homes along that street have
backyards that overlook the river and enjoy private access and private piers. These modest, older homes are in top demand. If one should go on the market they get snapped up quickly by those in the know. There are several great places to eat in town with the Thirsty Turtle being a favorite place to gather after a day on the river.
Birding is a popular pastime in Stoddard. This part of the River is known as the Upper Mississippi Fly way. It is very much like a super highway for migrating bird traffic between the U.S. and Canada. Cranes, Pelicans, Egrets and Great Blue Herons are easily spotted in the marshy areas along the river's banks. While Bald Eagle watching bring many visitors into to town as well. There are now plenty of eagles to watch and they have made a great come back. It is awe inspiring to get a close-up look at them soaring thought the air and over the river.
