Varisco BuildingHave you ever attended the First Friday in Historic Downtown Bryan?

We went last night for the first time and I ended up feeling somewhat like a tourist.  I was awed.  Granted, we did run into a number of friends, but I found myself viewing the downtown area differently.

Carnegie Library

Right about sunset, the buildings looked especially beautiful.

Even though I remember shopping in down town as a little girl, long before the mall was ever built, I noticed details that I've never noticed before.

Carnegie Library

Most people gathered around the LaSalle Hotel to listen to Razz.  The band was set up on the sidewalk Razzand treated everyone to jazz and soul music.  They were really good.

At the Frame Gallery, visitors were also treated to live jazz and blues music, cheese &  crackers, and a cash wine bar.  Various types of original art and jewelry were on display.  There was plenty of room for everyone to mingle and relax.  .

We also visited a couple of antique stores - just because.

For dinner, a choice of restaurants was available.  It was a tough, tough decision.  We opted for Mexican food at Casa Rodriquez because they had the shortest wait since they were not located practically in the center of all of the activity.  Other choices were Los Nortenos, Papa Perez Mexican Cuisine, Mr. G.s Pizzeria, Madden's Causal Gourmet, River Bridge Bar & Grill, and Caffe Capri - one of my family's most favorite places to eat.  However, any one of these restaurants would be an excellent choice for lunch or dinner.

This is just a sampling of the activities that were going on.   If you are in the Bryan College Station area, IHowell Building recommend attending the First Friday next month.  I hope to see you there.

Sondra, you along with others from around the country, do an excellent job with your walking tours. This one in Bryan, a Texas city I have not visited, made me feel like I was taking a stroll with you and listening to you tell me about the town. I think the setting sun for the First Friday event made for some interesting lighting for your photos. What I liked is it all seemed so peaceful with the music and the many dining selections. A "perfect" way to spend a summer Friday evening. Now if we can get someone to turn the heat down. We had 102 degrees at 6:30 pm today here. That child with the fountain shot is my favorite.

Thanks for sharing the photo's. We should all take time to take advantage of some sightseeing in our hometown. You don't realize how much you have been missing until you take a look-about.

Deb, well....I've gotten my inspiration for C in how to handle these things.  Actually, I've been thinking that you need to give me a tour of Lake Livingston.  At this time of year, that area sounds really appealing.  Plus, I'm still trying to figure out the best place in Texas is to cool off.

Hi Carl, you are welcome.  Now that I'm carrying a camera around, it continually suprises me what I've overlooked for years.

Gary, that little girl was so cute.  I had seen her with one of the statues origionally, but I missed her.  I have another picture of children that I like a little more, but I'm saving it for a different post.  This heat is HOT.

Sondra

Good job on the photos and description! We enjoyed the evening too...even though we ate a liitle too much including ice cream at the soda fountain at Corner of Time. The music was good at both places that had music..

I remember going to the Carnegie Library almost 50 years ago every summer. They had programs on Saturdays for children and a reading club. I am so glad they are saving our downtown Bryan.  Oh... and LBJ spent a lot of time ,I hear , on top of the Varisco Building visiting with locals..

Marchel, thank you!

Trey, I'm still kicking myself for not taking a picture of you and your wife.  They have done a great job with revitalizing down town.  I don't think I've ever been to Carnegie Library.... I just remember the escalator at Woolworths, Courts, and the Kimbells Feed Store.

Sondra, instead of going away for vacation one year, my husband and I stayed in our area.  We went to Charlotte, NC and acted like tourists.  It's amazing how much you really miss living in your own city.  It can be quite cool to see all that there is to offer right in your backyard.

I was born and raised in Memphis and have never gone to Graceland.  I wasn't the only one.  A majority of the people who live in Memphis hadn't gone as well.  Only the tourists.  And then I lived in Orlando, Fl for a short while and a lot of people there had never gone to Disney, Sea World or Universal Studios.  Why is that?  Why don't we want to discover what is in our backyard first?
