The best move I made in my Ridgewood Real Estate career was deciding from the start that I would only work with folks that I thought were honest, decent, nice people. I lost a few deals over the years because I deselected some clients and we've recently passed on hiring some Ridgewood agents that would have made our firm a lot of money. But, in the end, choosing only to work with good people makes for a much better quality of life. Which brings me to the first key to a great client appreciation party...

2008 Ridgewood Party

1. Invite Good People

This one is pretty obvious but you'd be surprised how many folks (in all types of businesses) continue to deal with folks they don't like, trust or respect and it ends up making them miserable. We had over 200 Ridgewood residents at our party and I can honestly say I enjoy the company of every one of them.

2. Plan Some Fun Things For The Kids To Do

Planning some fun games and activities is nice for the kids and if the children are enjoying themselves it is easier for their parents to relax and have some fun with their friends.

3. An Ice Cream Truck Packed With Free Ice Cream Is Always A Big Hit In the Summer

4. Don't Forget To Say "Thanks".

If you are lucky, like I am, to have great family, friends, clients and colleagues make sure to tell them how much you appreciate them - not just at the party but throughout the year.

The Secret Weapon

This little Mighty Mister fan may be small but it blows off a cool mist that can reduce the temperature on my deck by 20 degrees. Admittedly, I love gadgets, but this is one that is truly worth the money.

Al, very nice!  I love to see my clients and family interact. It is amazing how similar they are:)  Attending Buffini's MasterMind?

It's a Good Life!

Fran - Thanks for your note.  I think if you are intentional about the type of folks you work with they probably do wind up being similar to your family and friends.  Hopefully, your clients, family and friends are all good people who are a pleasure to work with and spend time with.  Unless, of course, it is Thanksgiving and your brother has had 10 or 12 beers, but I won't get into that now.

You can pick your clients but you can't pick your brother family.

Nancy - Thanks for your note.  The ice cream truck was a big hit. And you are right about the kids having fun.  The kids were happy and having fun so it was easier for the adults to relax and chat.

I held a Client Appreciation party up here in Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod.  Since my area is a huge second home resort community, the trick was getting my Clients who live all over the country to come in for the party.  I sent out about 150 invitations, about 50 people showed up.  It was a lot of fun and I think worth the time and effort!

Rick- 50 people is an excellent turn out for any client appreciation event and it is all the more impressive given that you are in a 2nd home resort community.  Do you feel like the event is worth the time and effort?  Do you host an event every year or more than once a year?  I definitely feel the client appreciation events are a good investment, in addition to being a lot of fun.

Joe - I have hosted this party every year I have been in real estate (all 3.5 of them).   Everyone does have a lot of fun and it is a great way to keep in touch with clients and it creates a lot of reasons to "touch" your clients.  There is a save the date note, RSVP call/email, last minute details to share, the party itself, thank you notes afterward, etc.

Al, I think that these parties or events, help to form a sense of community with your clients, neighbors and family.  They get to see you having fun, which isn't the usual relationship that they have with a Realtor:)  Are you attending MasterMind next week?

I love the ice cream truck and having stuff to keep kids happy is a huge plus. How often do you do a Thank you party. Do you always do family friendly parties? I have tried a number of different things for client events, but I have done the whole family/kid thing yet.

Aloysius,

My client appreciation party is next week. I wish I could have thought about the ice cream truck. I only hope I'll have such a great turn-out as you've had.

Nechama - Yes, so far, I have always done the family friendly parties because I have two young boys (6 and 8) so I make it fun for my clients and for my family.  This may change as they get older.  What types of events have you hosted?  Any tips?
