Dear Real Estate Diary:  I've been thinking about places to cool off in Texas.  Almost any body of water has crossed Brazos River Milam County Linemy mind.  Here in the Bryan College Station area, we are part of an area known as the Brazos Valley.  We have a river called the Brazos River.  It marks the boundary of one side of our county.

I've also felt like the Brazos River would make a good Localism topic.

At this point down stream, the Brazos River is not commonly thought of as a recreational amenity.  For most of us, it just seems to be there.  As we go over the bridges, we might notice the water level, but for most of us, that is about it.   I've heard that some people canoe in the river.  I've heard about people that have drowned trying to swim in it.  And, as I discovered this morning, some people actually fish in the Brazos.)

In contrast, I've heard that in Weatherford, Texas, people buy homes along the Brazos and launch boats onto the Brazos.....If that is true, it is really hard to imagine.  Most places along the river here is farm land.  Cotton and corn primarily.

Brazos River Rail Road BridgeToday, as I was taking pictures of the river, I noticed that it is actually pretty.

I've never really taken the time to stop and just look at the river.

But, then again...it may be safer to actually keep driving.  Taking pictures on a bridge was a test of how Brazos River -Brazos Countydaring I was.  By the time I finished, I was not engaging in a turtle run.....I ran.  Cheetah like.  As fast as I could.   My little two or three foot strip on side of the bridge didn't give me the comfort level I needed.  Although most vehicles would go into the other lane to make me feel more comfortable, one car did not.  That one car that choose to stay in it's lane did me in.  Taking pictures of a river from a bridge is not worth getting squashed.  No more taking pictures on bridges for Sondra.

The last two pictures of the River were taken in Brazos County.  I discovered that the State owns the land around the bridges and you can acccess the river from a side "road."  It was much safer way to photograph the river.

Wow Sondra. Be safe with the cars. The pictures are awesome. I like bridge pictures. Neal Bloom just did one on bridges around New York City. The sky is so blue in your photos. I'm all for finding the cool spots of water. This heat is tremendous this time of year. You are motivating me to be a much better photographer than I am. A lot of it is taking the risk to get the shot. Just don't fall in the river LOL.

Sondra:  I would just love to have a small home on the Brazos.  Just a two bedroom... some trees... just a place with river frontage where I could go and hide when I needed to.  What a dream come true that would be.  I remember going to Girl Scout camp way back when... and that dream was there... then, too.  That actually may be where it came from.  I would love to come and take a look if you know of anything.  Take care... and thanks for the beautiful pictures.

SUPER pics Sondra, that's what I like to see. I can see the shadows of trees on your two river shots, wonderful.

Very nice post, great info, great shots and not a long post.

Thanks,

Robert

First thought... don't get squished for a localism post... it's jut not worth it. haha

Second... you did a great job with the photo's.  They are absolutely beautiful.  So do folks not use the river in your neck of the woods because it's not developed that far out or??  Here, riverfront property, even remote-no-road-access riverfront property is in demand.

Sondra - very nice pictures of the Brazos. You don't often think of Texas looking like that. Take care not to get squashed, squished, flattenned or eaten by bears on your picture taking excursions. We would miss the pictures, and especially the picture taker.

Sondra, those shots are outstanding! I love your work! You have a gorgeous photographer's eye! (BTW, stay safe, my lovely - no more cheetah runs for you, at least not in traffic or from the edge of a bridge - ROTFL). I love this post -- YOU ROCK girlfriend!!!

Gary, I'll admit falling into the water WAS my other concern.   I'm not very good with heights.  lol

Jesse, people like river front property but it doesn't sell that often and when it does it is usually a very large tract of farm land.  Your question got me to thinking.....  We have several other creeks, rivers and lakes nearby, so I'm wondering if people gravitate towards those because they are more accessible.  I think I need to get Trey Thurman's  thoughts on this one.

Mike, lol.  I probably don't have to worry about bears here.  Thaks for the compliments.

Robert, thank you for your feedback.  Keeping posts "short" is one of my challenges as a writer.

Carolyn, awe....THANK YOU.  I'm looking forward to seeing pics from your next turtle run.

Karen, the place that you describe sounds like it would be a wonderful place to live.  Should I come across one, I will let you know.  And, since you only need a two bedroom, that might be the type that I could actually find.   Imagine being able to go down to the river early in the morning...so quiet and peaceful.  You have painted a very pretty picture for me.

Sondra:  You are such a silly person.  Don't you know that any picture of you is automatically a "pretty picture... !"  Take care... have a great Sunday :)

Sondra, it does look like on a calm weather day the Brazos would be a fun river to canoe on. With such a shallow draft with that category of boat you could really get around even in the most shallow of water. Your pictures just look so peaceful. It reminds me of these hideaways that locals find in their area that are so charming. You almost don't want to tell others about it because you've found "your" little slice of heaven.

Sondra, these are great shots! I am familiar with your Brazos and it looks low. We are experiencing the same drought like conditions. Scott and I went to the theater today to watch Dark Knight and we lost power! When we went inside it was a beautiful day and within 15 minutes of the movie the film went down, the emergency lights came on and we could hear thunder. That happened twice.

When they let us out of the theater it looked as if a tornado hit! Wierd.

Very refreshing photos, and the stillness of the water is quite calming.  Keep that camera handy--and thanks for sharing a little bit of Texas with us.
