Oh but my title is a bit deceiving-----there really isn't a problem with the Hilton Head Airport. It's a little gem that I consider a very valuable community asset. It's modern, efficient and serves an important need for the community.
The problem, in my humble opinion, lies with our local politicians who are butting heads like wild boars instead of acting for the good of the community.
You see, we have a little issue with the runway length-----simply, it's a tad too short for regional jets to safely as well as legally land at the airport. The Delta Connection just announced that service would be terminated at the end of November due to the fact they are retiring their ATR 7 commuter planes. In short, (no pun intended), the runway will need to be lengthened by approximatly 800 feet to get it up to standards. And yes, it can be accomplished.
I believe it would be prudent for our politicians to get on board and address this issue for the good of the community rather than putting their personal opinions and preferences in the way of progress. And that's the way I see it---politicians who in the past, have put their personal interests in the way of doing what makes sense.
Whew, I guess this issue strikes a raw nerve with me.....I fervently believe we need to preserve our local airport. Comments welcome!

Diane, whatever the cost of lengthening the runway, I think it would be made up pretty quickly in savings to passengers and benefits to the business community. Geez!
