The Steeplechase Blog & Directory

My creative marketing idea has been to create a free wordpress blog for my neighborhood of 153 homes, helping keep everyone connected; and get to know every family who lives here by creating a .pdf directory, following up on the previous print directory created by a different agent.

Here is the blog: http://thesteeplechase.wordpress.com

When I moved in a year and a half ago, I knew one or two families.

By the time I am done with the directory this year, I will know more than 75% of  the families by first name, including their kids, businesses, emails and by sight.

What's best - they will know me.

The entire process has been completely free of charge. It has just taken time.

Okay, I like that but wonder how big a "neighborhood" are you shooting for? Do you primarily use your own neighborhood or do you "Sponsor" a further away neighborhood. Like my neighborhood has like 12 houses in it. Most of them have lived here for years and years. It was a fluke that we got to move in.... I'm wondering if this is more advantageous for a larger neighorhood?

I've had a few clients actually consider setting up a blog or directory just for their "neighborhood" or farm area.  This has GOT to be a great way to saturate that area with YOU!  I'm looking forward to hearing your answers to Lindsey's questions too!

Lindsey, I think you might want to include a few neighborhoods if yours only has 12 homes...but it's a start! Then again, you might just use those 12 and talk about the world around you and how you all fit in and make a difference...you could include when brush pickup is, absentee voting information, school or tax levy information and who to contact for community questions.

Renae, It is super! But timing is important and maintaining diligence even when no one seems to participate right away. I started the blog in December, but didn't get my nerve up to tell anyone about it until Spring. It just so happened that the board had just decided to drop the costly & boring newsletter when I showed up with this blog. They thought it was GREAT! It was free, it was cool, and it didn't have to be done by them!!!

Hmmm. It would be a start, but I'm in an acreage neighborhood. I'm still thinking that I would need to sponsor a different neighborhood alltogether. Maybe one that isn't too far from where I am. :-)

Lindsey, As long as you really know it, go for it. Definitely a good choice, but only do it if you enjoy it - I like doing this, whether or not it makes money. I feel I am adding something to my community's value.

Are you getting participation from your community?  I am just starting a "green" blog for my area and am hoping to make it a group effort.  Great job!

This is an idea I have considered but have just never gotten around to.  It's a good reminder.

Diane, The response is very good, but people do take a long time to realize it's there for them. You will definitely add value - I know I have.

Kent, Thanks!! I am going to get some publicity from winning third too - I will post about it!

Wayne, The price is right and the timing is right - works out great!

Christine, I'm a slow burn too - I started this in December and didn't do anything with it until Spring!!
