Many students tend to goof off, not work, or just watch movies when a substitute teacher is in the classroom.  The Rankin County School District wants to put a stop to any down time when a substitute has to come in a classroom.  So, in an effort to improve that and  test scores, the Rankin County School District will be conducting mandatory training for every substitute teacher.  Cities included in the Rankin County School District are: Brandon , Florence , Flowood, Pearl, and Richland . 

Statistics show that between kindergarten and twelfth grade, a student will have spent one full year with a substitute teacher.  And, from these statistics, Rankin County has found there can be improvements made by giving extra training to their substitute teachers. 

The first training will be a four-hour seminar that will discuss district policy and review teaching strategies, classroom management skills, and school safety procedures.  To be a substitute teacher, you must be at least the age of twenty, undergo background checks and have a high school diploma.  In Rankin County , substitute teachers are paid $55 a day or more, depending on their education.  There are currently over 750 substitutes in the county.

We applaud the Rankin County School District for their efforts to create a better school system.
