Activerain has given so many people the platform to expand business, network, find answers, seek support both professional and personal, vent our frustrations, and get to know others, and ourselves, a little bit better.  The entire concept of Activerain with its tie-ins to Localism, and now our outside blogs, can only be applauded for the forum and opportunities provided to both members and consumers.

Recently, problems have cropped up where members' blog posts and/or comments to private Activerain groups have been made public through Localism.  Personally, I have to admit that this can be pretty disturbing because the private groups I belong to were set up as private for valid reasons:  members can share their thoughts, blow off some steam, or kick back and relax without worrying over offending other people.  While I don't believe I've posted anything offensive, I'm sure I've made more than few wise-cracking comments that would not present me in the best professional light possible.

With some trepidation, I searched through Localism looking for my comments.  I reset the settings on my Activerain home page.  I googled myself.  Attempting to figure out whether or not I needed to do some major league damage control over comments I assumed would remain private.  I started reading other posts to see if anyone else was doing the same.

And then, sanity set back in again.  What's done is done, and even if my posts and comments aren't currently on Localism, there's always the heart-stopping thought that they've already been cached.  I can't do anything about that.  To the best of my belief, the worst of what I've said simply presents me in a less than flattering form professionally.  They are a small insight into what I'm like when I'm just being me, not trying to nail a listing or pull together a sale.  It is not who I am as a whole, and I am still just human.

All said and done, things could have been much worse.  It could have been my social security number, credit history, medical records, or worse - my real age.  I think I can weather this, and wait patiently while the 'Rain gods work this problem out.  In the meantime,  I might not swear like a truck driver quite so much, but I will keep on posting.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for posting this blog! I submitted yet another ticket over the weekend and it appears things might be working now. All my posts 2 this time were removed from localism, they were members only! Your right though. It's now more important than ever to be wise what you say. We can still cut lose here if we choose, but we just have to be more mindful. :)

Hey Greg, nice to hear from you! I'm still going to cut loose, but I will be a little more careful. I put this out as a general blog (as well as to the BEST group on activerain!). I just haven't seen many people upset over this happening, and wondered if it was because not everyone knows, or not everyone cares??? I care! Still looking forward to the next block party!

Hello Sharon..I don't worry about people being able to see my comments. What I don't like is someone being able to follow me around in the rain via my comments.

Sandra, that is a great mental picture you've painted in just a few words!  Creepy, and disturbing, the thought of being stalked so, but very insightful of you.

Oh Sharon.....I was soooooooooooo guilty of joking around off color. Thankfully most of my clients already I love to kid around so they will think I'm just kicking up my heels and playing hearty.

But it's the prospective clients, that would have maybe contacted me and I lost that chance due to AR errors. When I saw that it went to Localism, I deleted the post. Many people lost points, but no one lost face.

You, Nancy, joking around?? Noooo, say it isn't so!!!! LOL! You were smart to delete the post. Points can be earned again, but you never get a second chance at a first impression, right?

By the way Sharon......how old are you? You look like a mere 21 in your photo! Great post! :)

Chris, can you be my new best friend???? You have unwittingly hit upon one of the biggest secrets I've ever kept - even my kids don't know my true age!  I will confess that I know I look young for my age, but I feel older I should for my age, so it all balances out, right?

Sharon...

So far...knock on wood I've not had any of my personal post put on Localizium, I know Greg has had big problems with them putting his out there, I still like the ones he did, and find it hard to believe someone would be upset by it.  But that's just me, big believer in live and let live.

Never thought about the comments, how the heck do you check those?  I can't remember what I said yesterday :).  I really don't care, if someone decided to not do business with me over a blog that was done in fun, I most likly would not want them as a client either.

I don't do liers, negitive people, and my believe is to always tell the truth, and anything I say about someone I would say if they were standing there.

Who was it that said, "I don't suffer fools well"?  Neither do I, so I will continue to write and play, and keep my sense of humor and who I am.  Glad to see you feel the same way, and great post.  L

Plus in this group I don't have to use spell check, so they most likely can't understand what I'm saying half the time :)

Sharon - You make excellent points here.  Perhaps one of the best is that we are all humans.  While we strive to be professional and act with integrity in all of our business relationships, we do also like to relax and unwind with family and friends.  Yes, this is a professional forum, but it is also a social network.  We build relationships here.  Letting people get to know you as a person is a good thing.

Liz, even without spell check, your message gets through to us loud & clear, LOL!

Nancy - argh! I ended up swamped and didn't get a chance to email you.  How was the turnout in the chat room?

Erik  - thank you!  You're absolutely right about letting people get to know us.  It is a very good thing.

There is that balance between writing a post meant for a real estate professional to comment on and something that is on the front page of localism.  That thought crosses my mind everytime I post something.
