Most of you know by now - that I am the placemat pillow queen.. I blogged here about placemat pillows and here about other throw pillows that I have made.  I love how inexpensive and quick they are to Making Leaf Placemat Decorative Pillowsmake.. Also, I find unique placemat prints to work with..

I picked up these great leaf placemats at Big Lots. They are part of the Jennifer Farrell collection. Each Big Lots store has different accessories from the collection. I was out of town a couple of weeks ago and found some beautiful candle holders and a decorative mirror that I could not find in the Hickory stores.

These two great decorative pillows were a quick project and with polyfill came out less than $7 each.

I probably would have had them finished in less than 30 minutes IF I could have:

  • Found the seam ripper - used a sharp knife point instead
  • Found some green thread-realized the top stitching was gold thread -found that  Decorative Placemat Pillows
  • Found my glasses to thread the sewing machine

Anyway, I love the way these turned out.. I hope to use them in the vacant staging that I am proposing today.. That home has a cabin feel with some wood interior so - the leaf print seems to fit..

Hey Cheryl! What a neat idea. I have never thought of using place-mats for pillows. Another good thing about using them though is they probably are coated with something that would make them more soil resistant too?!?!?! You have some really great ideas!

Cheryl, I saw this fabric already made into pillows at BIG LOTS and I loved the tranparency of the leaves, but they were in their "designer" section and too high priced for my budget, even at Big Lots. (-: I didn't see any placemats. Great job...I will have to revisit that store and look again. Thanks for sharing.

  • Ginger-I think when I first saw this collection - I saw the pillows and wouldn't pay the price either.. Also, they will continue to take an additional percentage off - if you can catch it before it's gone.. I will share a couple other things I got there soon.
  • Barbara, Thanks so much- glad you like it -not talent really... I always try to look at things outside the box..

How crafty and creative, I'm not a sewer and am not crafty.  I envy people that can whip things together.

I happened on this blog when I received my Alert from Google on Morganton. I am presently in the Philippines and try to keep up with news from home. These are so cute, and now your are known internationally!! NO Big Lots here, but I'll have to look around for a similar store. Best of luck with your creativeness!

Ronelle, I'm happy to know that I inspired you - now go make a pillow... If you have some fiberfill - you can just stuff it with that - no need for pillow forms and less expensive.. Sometimes - I find great bargains on bed pillows, cut them open and use the fiberfill from them - often cheaper than polyfill in a bag... OK - please share your new pillows !!  God bless,

Love this! Pillows can be pricey. I listed a house last week and went back yesterday to photo after they staged over the weekend. They used a bedspread with coordinating pillow covers to redo a chair. It looked great and just goes to show that a redo can be inexpensive.

Hi Cheryl,  I really like the leaf pattern on those placemats, especially the colors. Unfortunately the 'Big Lots' store near me isn't stocked too well. I never seem to find all the great deals a lot of others blog about.

Love your creative & cost effective idea!

WOW---you know....i KNEW..just KNEW that you could do something like this with placemats......my grandmother and grandaunt used to have circular cloth placmates and for some odd reason this memory came to me about 2 days ago.......and they used to make old MAPS into placemats by covering them with some type of clear something??? i didnt know how they did that.....

Good job Cheryl.......you are soo creative....i love it!

May I submit another idea for placemats...please!!! Sew three sides of 2 placemats together. A 9x13 cake pan should slip in (Please use a cover on the pan!) Then pin a ribbon to the upper left side-tie a spatula or spoon to it. Great for a still warm pan, ready to serve, and pretty! I have even embroidered the name of a client to it-and left for a gift! (For embroidery I wash first due to shrinkage with the embroidery)

Cheryl, I will have to whip some up! I have given all mine away to date, but was thinking about doing them for Halloween with a pumpkin cake inside. (I love to bake!) Client have told me they make great hot pads for other things when they bake due to the large size and thickness, and they are washable. I will get you some photo's as soon as I can!

As you can see, I whipped this one up more for the idea. There is alot of room to personalize if you have a machine that embroiders names.  I have even added a small ruffle to 3 sides. I usually use a simple ribbon to tie utensil. But you get the idea!

I will probably get the disposable kind of cake pan with lid to do the cakes or cupcakes
