My best friend - who happens to be a lesbian - always uses this phrase.  Often I tease her about it because she uses it in funny places.... I'm giving driving directions and say, "go straight"... she'll remind me that she "always goes forward, never straight."  Now, I'm not trying to bring in a political discussion regarding sexual orientation, I'm just telling you where the saying came from.  This morning for some reason as I was trying to go back to sleep - it's one of the rare mornings when I get to sleep in - this saying popped into my head.... and I started thinking more about it.  I wasn't thinking about the way she used the words but rather the words themselves.

Out loud say the following phrases:  "Go straight ahead," or "Continue forward."  Which sounds better?  Which is more true to life.  I don't know about you but for my life forward is always the direction I chose to be in.  My life is not like a steamboat going straight ahead.  It has little dips now and again - ebbs and flows.  Still I'm always looking and moving foward no matter what life brings my way.

I think it occured to me in my little falling asleep mind that there may really be more to this saying than meets the eye...

Cute post, Melissa.  It's all about terminology.  So does this leave out the phrase "straight forward" as well??

Hi Melissa - I agree, in life you can only go straight ahead.  You can't change yesterday, you can only make tommorow better!!!!

Melissa, I had an 86 yr old friend tell me that "farmers have to keep looking forward while driving the tractor to plant their fields in straight rows. If they keep turning around and looking back, it's hard to stay on track."

Going forward is a wonderful outlook on life, and being flexible (never straight) to accept change and "roll with the punches" is too. This post gave me a smile remembering my old friend...thank you.

Wow, you and your friend have taught me something here.  Thank you. Going forward here seems to mean making progress and moving in the right direction.  Going straight doesn't necessarily mean that does it?

Thank you!

Thanks for the great post, Melissa.  I think that you're right--"continue forward" is more apt than "go straight".

It is funny how a small change in wording can mean such a big difference..... Yes Caleb, that's exactly what it means!  If you simply go straight, sometimes you will end up in the wrong direction.  Sometimes the right way is the long way around... and you are still going forward.....

I have heard this same phrase before, but never had the epiphany that you did.  Thanks for sharing it.

I've always wondered why companies have Retreats - shouldn't they be Advances?

Wasn't it the Pioneers while traversing the Great American Midwest called out "Forward Ho" not "Straight Ho"

"Straight ahead" may not be the best direction to move in, but if you keep moving forward, you will experience all that life has to offer.   I like to use the analogy that when we drive, we have to keep our eyes on the road ahead in order to get to where we want to go...you cannot drive forward if you are keeping your eyes glued to the rear-view mirror in order to see what was past (you won't get far - alive - driving that way!).  So too, in life itself, we just have to move forward.
