the Hunter in 1967 - Saskatoon Sask Canada

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

I remember the '60's

I just want to drop by and say what a great place Saskatoon is.  This is where I grew up and went to school, in the '60's and '70's.  It was a safe place where you could live and not lock your doors back then.  In the summer we would ride our bicycles all over the place with no cares in the world, and be gone all day.  Oh I miss those long summer nights... fireworks on the riverbank, camping in the back yard, getting into trouble at night (oh wait, that was later on).  There was the Exhibition where you could eat cotton candy and candy apples, and then go on the rides until you threw up!  Pike Lake was one of the nearby swimming holes - I wonder if that's still any fun?  In winter we would toboggan down the riverbank and freeze our noses and toes.  The sunny winter weather was cold, but cheerful, and we bundled up to make snowmen and have snowball fights with the neighbor kids.  The snow was epic back then - when they plowed the streets, they would leave huge snowbanks on the boulevards, and in the schoolyard.  Winters were long, but spring was always a welcome sight.  The smells of spring - lilacs, hyacinths, wet mittens - those things bring back memories.

Nutana High School - Saskatoon Sask

I remember the '70's ( I think)

Did anyone else go to Nutana High School?  When I look at my old yearbook, I have to laugh at what dorks we all were.  I have never attended a high school reunion, and hope I never have to... haha.  It was a good time though, and we didn't have to be afraid of crazy students, only the vice principal!  We were free to come and go at lunchtime, and most of us would walk or ride home, even if it was a mile away.  Of course this was a good time to get strayed off and sometimes we didn't come back.  Sure we had the jocks and the nerds and the greasers, but really everyone got along, it was a "small town" atmosphere.

Such innocent times were soon over.  A bigger world was calling me and I headed off to the west coast just as soon as possible.

What now?

So that was then and this is now.... I'm living the dream on Maui - how did I get here?  I can tell you one thing - it was the weather on Maui that enticed me to stay.  No more snow, ever!  No scraping the windshield and plugging the car in overnight.  No more driving on icy roads - I hated that!

Saskatoon was a great place to come from, but I'm really enjoying living in Hawaii.  There are plenty of Canadians here on Maui, both part time and full time.  They know a good thing when they see it.  Why not give it a try next time you're thinking about a winter vacation?  (Bring your own buttertarts though, you won't find them here.)  We speak English here, and you can eat the food without getting sick.  Once you get hooked on this island lifestyle, you might want to consider buying a vacation condo on Maui.

Georgina - what a wonderful post....not at all prejudiced....from one Canuck to another :-)  I was born and raised in Montreal, came to Florida in 1978.  Like you said, it's all about the weather and I don't do full-time snow either.  I must say, Hawaii is much more exotic than Florida, but Florida's a good second!  I remember most of the 70's ;-)  Nice meeting you.

Hi Gail - thanks for dropping in, fellow ex-Canuck!  I made this post when I went to Localism for Saskatoon and there was NOTHING there.  I tried to encourage a S'toon agent to put her posts in, but thought I might as well do one myself.  Cheers!

Georgina, You are cute as a button! Nothing dorky there. I love the "I think" quote...I'm there with you! Crazy time! I'm so glad to have you here and I am looking forward to getting to know you better! I sure don't blame you for choosing Maui.

Hi Deb - It was funny looking through the old pictures.  I'll have to post a few more, just for laughs.  Thanks for coming by.

Georgina, It makes me want to pull out the boxes of oldie but goodies myself! That is something I have procrastinated doing. Thanks for the nudge.

Now... talk about extremes... from Canada to Hawaii... is there any two places less alike?

Georgina, my father immigrated to Canada, before he came to the states. So in my 60's childhood, we spent summers there visiting family friends. Now my son and wife want to go. This is a good post for localism, now I need to go over and check out your videos! Have a good week.

Chuck - actually Maui is a lot like Canada - the people here are really friendly and casual

Frank - whereabouts in Canada was it you visited?

Georgina- We travelled around the central portions of the country (my parents are big on road trips and exploring out of the way areas). My father lived in Toronto and Banf. After escaping from the communists, he was living in a refugee camp, when his future stepfather convinced him that Canada was the land of opportunity. He learned English by watching movies on the weekends. He worked for Lockheed-Martin as a ferry pilot.

Frank - my parents also emigrated to the land of opportunity, and it was a good thing.  I'm glad they didn't decide on Australia, which was their 2nd choice.  I would totally recommend you take your family to Banff and Jasper and the Canadian Rockies - the scenery is amazing.  Our family would spend summer vacations camping there, with the grandparents out from England - I don't know how my mom did it, in a small trailer.  Many fond memories.  Toronto is a big city, with all those attractions, but you probably have enough of that already.
