Akron Ohio Homes Asks, Are Pit Bulls Really the Problem?

By
Real Estate Agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services

Is this guy really that big a problem that cities and counties would seek their elimination? That police officers should be able to shoot them on site? They shot one in Cleveland today, for just walking on the sidewalk!

Is he mean?

Every day lately, I hear news in Ohio of new Pit Bull laws to restrict or get rid of pit bulls in a city or county. Why? Is it the animal or the "people" that own them at fault?

I love animals, but, I sure do not want a breed that could hurt or maim my children! But, I have seen many "bulls" that were great friends of their owners and good neighbors. Doesn't it depend on who raises them?

What's wrong with this picture? Can they be good pets? Do you have a good one and, now, are you afraid to take them for a walk? What should we do as a society? The balls in your court!

There are cities here in the Detroit area that have restrictions on the breed. I think that  Pit Bulls are just like any other large breed dog, they can be dangerous if not raised properly or trained to be that way. Where do you draw the line, Rottweilers, Great Danes I don't know. A friend had a St Bernard that was one of the meanest dogs I have ever known, do we ban the breed because of this dog? My wife and I raised a Pit Bull and it was and still is a great dog. we raised her from the time she was a puppy and she spent time a couple years living with our Yorkie who I suspect thinks he's a Pit Bull.

David, If people aren't allowed to own them, then they won't be bred at all (since they are bred for money) and then the population of pit bulls will naturally decline.

Shirley- Thank you, but your logic is not real to me! The majority of the bulls are not bred for killing, that's my point! It's called genocide, no matter the species, IMHO. Thank you.

ok, even tho I still think they are ugly and dangerous, I don't think we should just kill them. Think if we applied this rule to people - whoa.

Everyone that has commented, all dogs way down the line are related to wolves. And wolves can harm and eat people when in packs just like any dog that in not domestic.

As for the pit bull, why are they allowing people to buy them if they are so dangerous?

I have seen gentle pitbulls in my life, but they were gentle because the owner had trained them that way.

David, I didn't say they were bred for killing.  I said they were bred for money.  I bought my little beagle from a breeder who bred him in order to make money.

I've shown homes in the past and have been attacked by the likes of this.  My solution in real estate...  Not anymore.  I will show if dogs are removed only.  I have seen some violent attacks...you woant to sell?  Get the dogs out of the house.

I like dogs, but when I see a big dog like that it tends to scare me.  Especially when you're at your clients house and they have to get the dog in the cage before you can enter.

Jim- I could not agree with you more! A very good friend of mine, a Broker doing a listing, was mauled in the face by the "family" pet, a Setter of all breeds. You can never be too cautious!

You know, I keep hearing that there is nothing wrong with Pitt Bulls except that many of their owners train them to be dangerous. That may well be the case but, just as has already been expressed above, what about all of the loving, caring Pitt Bulls that suddenly turn on their owners or their owners' children or a stranger walking by? I watched an episode of a show about the most disturbing 911 calls once.  I only watched because the preview talked about this dog that attacked an elderly woman.  They gave some statistics after the 911 call relating just how many people are attacked by Pitt Bulls and <gasp!> German Shepherds seemingly out of the blue. It was shocking to say the least.  The woman who's dog attacked the elderly woman said that the neighborhood kids are always in her yard, playing with her dog because he just LUVS people. And then something snapped and he didn't quite love people so much anymore.

I think it is our fault. Human beings tend to think that they own and can control everything on earth. Although I firmly believe that this is the way that God intended for it to be from the beginning, something got terribly screwed up along the way. Now, we are attempting to control things that we shouldn't, like animals that can turn into ferocious beasts on a dime.

The solution? There is no solution. If you make the sale of certain breeds of dogs illegal, they will just be sold illegally. If you choose one breed to eradicate and another breed attacks someone, do you then select that breed for eradication as well? If so, it will never stop. And believe me, someone, somewhere, will ALWAYS have a reason why this particular type of dog should be gotten rid of. And then it will move on - specific breeds of cats are mean; ferrets bite; hamsters poop everywhere. In my opinion, t will never end.

Killing them on site may be a bit harsh. Flip side a kid here in West Mich had his arm ripped off by the family pet. A pit bull.

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS! I have owned German Shepards, Dobermans and Pit Bull Mixes, all of them wonderful, loving dogs.  Uneducated people act in fear and out of fear and the animals suffer for it. There should be rules in place like leash laws etc...but banning breads or putting entire breeds to death is WRONG and uneducated.  We need to stop Dog fighting rings, Grey Hound racing and puppy mills that supply Mall Puppy stores..NOONE should be able to buy a puppy on the spot, based on emotions. We need to follow through with fines and punishment on people that break rules that are put in place to protect Us and the Dogs.  Yes, there are some badly behaved dogs out there, some down right dangerous, but when we start condeming entire breeds we are going down a very dangerous slope.  That's my  two cents...ha

My saying is "its not if your pit bull bites but when will it bite?"  No matter what you say or want to say, there is a reason that pit bulls are among the top dog breeds for bites.  It is bred into them and whether they ever fight or were ever trained, they bite.  If you want your family around them thats fine but please respect my fear of your dog.

Hello... After reading all the comments posted on here I can't help but agree and disagree soo much...one woman said uneducated people act in fear... and yes there are some poor attituded animals but at the same time there are humans that are the same way... take the gangs and the people that go around killing and assulting other people.... we don't shoot them on site do we...some of you should be ashamed of yourselves...its in no way the dogs fault... if you want to piont your fingers to some one to blame .. piont them at the people who own those dogs... same as poor parenting...and I don't know if any of you are aware of this..... BUT ALL DOGS BITE... littel dogs big dogs.... ALLLLL DOOGGGGSSSSS..... so why not kill em alll.... you people are soo dumb get over it dogs bite ... cats bite... hamsters bite....instead of of trying to put the blame on one thing...OPEN YOUR EYES...AND LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE
