On July 21st we held our annual charity golf tournament at Alpine County Club in Cranston, RI. The tournament turned out to be a much bigger success than could have been anticipated given the sluggish economy. Final figures put our efforts at $19,000, which was higher than our projections. Proceeds benefit the Hasbro Children's Hospital, RI Community Food Bank, and The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone involved including our Platinum and Tee Sign Sponsors and of course all of my fellow committee members and numerous volunteers.
Heat and humidity ruled the day with a late afternoon shower that drenched us all without any relief from the heat after it passed. I had a really great time with my playing partners, Mike Pereira, Tom Capraro and Jim Carlson. We started out playing very well and continued to play fairly well throughout the day. One of the bonuses of playing in an event like this is the generously donated gifts and products that we all get to enjoy throughout the day.
I hadn't been out on the links for almost two years and I was surprised by how well I was striking the ball on the front 9. The back 9 wasn't as pretty due to an achey back that I'd been battling for a few weeks leading up to the tournament. It's no excuse and I'm hoping that after few more rounds and a little more exercise I'll be able to play a complete round. Only time will tell.
After the long day of golf we were treated to a wonderful reception and cocktail hour before sitting down to enjoy a delicious dinner and the presentation of the awards. Some of the fund raising events we had included a silent auction with donated prizes and sports memorabilia and raffles for a host of great prizes. I'm very proud to have been a committee member and I look forward to many future events that the GPBOR will be presenting.
