That means that in order to keep the Village of Wellington in business as a town it must rely on mostly property taxes for its' existance and services. The problem with this is that too much pressure is than put on raising property taxes. In the days when the people are voting to lower state property taxes and more reductions of property taxes on our ballot in November; the raising of taxes is not a popular thing to do anymore. You can read the letter from the mayor of the Village of Wellington to the Realtor Association of the Palm Beaches as we rallied and sent thousands of emails to the Mayor and the counsel members to NOT raise taxes in the Village of Wellington.
The time has come for the Village of Wellington leadership to think outside of the box and develop other ways of generating income.
Planners are approaching Wellington with ways to do just that.
One of the ideas that was presented to the Village of Wellington was to change the part of Forest Hill Blvd into a vibrant village center. There is no downtown here in Wellington. We all go to West Palm Beach to Cityplace to take in a movie and for entertainment. It is time to develop our own downtown.
There must be an incarnation if we are to maintain our wonderful lifestyle. Why not keep us here in town? Why not build a cityplace type area right here in Wellington? One of the visions would be to create the corner of Wellington Trace and Forest Hill Blvd into a pedestrian area where you could just walk around shops and eateries, entertainment along with Palm Trees and fountains. I am so excited about this idea because this area is already walking distance from where we live. We love to walk so this would be so fun for our family. This is also the future of neighborhoods. More and more the suburban areas will have to adapt to becoming walkable towns or they will lose a lot of residents to places like CityPlace where you don't even need a car. This is very attractive to baby boomers and millenials.
We already can walk to our grocery store, hardware store, dollar store, restaurants and more. Having a slower pace on this busy intersection would also save lives.
Right now there is a nice Wellington Sign when you enter into Wellington but we can really embellish that area to feel like this is a real destination not just a drive through.
Planners are also envisioning totally revamping a couple of old neighborhoods that are in need of rehab terribly. But they would insist on a total redo not a makeover.
The next thing that the Village needs to look into is doing some rezoning for income producing infrastructure. We need to encourage people to create jobs here and have high paying jobs to keep that tax revenue here instead of losing it to West Palm Beach and other cities where most people work.
The vision also includes really decorating the Equestrian parts of our community with horse themes and have a real entrance to the areas. Adding unique lighting posts and street signs to really bring that town feleling to life.
We now have enough people to support this vision. Let's stay home and play!
Of course this is a long term vision and will take years to complete. Some planners say that much of this can be accomplished in 7 years. The plans will be unveiled in August and then there will 6 months of meetings, reviews and panning and opening it up to the community for input. Remember that when you spend a little money doing things like this you will get it back through the tax base without raising taxes.
