Business Systems are key to keeping our business and relationships professional.
And, with all the discussion about how to get paid and when to get paid, many of us also do pro bono work - just like attorneys!  So how do attorneys manage to do "no charge" and still remain professional?  They have a system:

Attorneys  are always sharing information - many times at no charge to family and friends.  They get asked to help friends and family with P&S or anything else that requires their legal eye to review some contract or paperwork.

My friend was helping his friends who were considering the purchase of a second home.  They asked him to put together the purchase and sale - some negotiations were required and eventually all the parties signed.

Because this is a business - and there is a system - and even though this work was no charge - An invoice was still prepared for the full amount of what would normally be charged.  Because this is the system - all work gets billed.

The difference was that across the invoice in large handwriting the attorney wrote:  no charge.

People do not appreciate or respect something for nothing and the invoice shows the value of the work.  The no charge notation shows the consideration.

The invoice was still prepared because that is the system.

So next time you do anything for "no charge" - and we all do - be sure to show the value of your efforts and use your business system - prepare the invoice and handwrite "no charge" across it - and the client will appreciate and respect your efforts.

You are so right.  I've never thought of that.   The client would have an idea of what your services cost and hopefully refer you to others.

Margaret:

Great advice.  I have a friend/collegue who has asked for my assistance to stage a home she will be listing, I won't charge her, your idea is a valid one.

Thanks,

Joyce

Margaret ~ This is a great reminder since most of us do, as you said, provide some complimentary services from time to time.  I'd never thought of it as "pro bono" but that's exactly what it is.  Thanks for the post!

I do often write no charge on a invoice for a service that I normally charge for but didn't in a particular case but never thought of submitting a invoice with "No Charge" on it for a complimentary consult or staging service but I think it is a great idea and will from now on.

What a great idea Margaret! The client will have a greater appreciation for your act of kindness.  They will feel like they received a great value and you will feel great helping a friend or business associate.  Thanks for sharing this tip!

That is a fantastic idea and tip!  Thank you for sharing that!  I do consultations all the time for people in my neighborhood and it's always free of charge.  I will be sure to incorporate this invoice system!

Perfect!  Itemizing the billable time, even when not charging, allows the client to appreciate the value of what they have received, and also to think twice about asking for more "freebies".  It also makes us appreciate the value of what we have gifted.  Thank you for a great suggestion.

Love it!  Can I go back to those from the past years and DO IT NOW.  Kidding.  From now on I will.

Hi Margaret,

This is a great way to show your value, and I do this.  Sometimes (almost always) I have to throw in a couple of "must haves" into my staging.   Maybe it is an extra piece of art, a couple extra cushions, a plant there always seems to me a few extras.  So I add to to the inventory list the client gets with a notation that these items are being used without charge.   That way they see they are getting a little something extra without charge and it makes them feel good.

Thanks for sharing..

Excellent idea to show my friends how much I really am giving them.  I don't charge my good friends, all I ask for in return is some lunch, good company and referrals.  How do they know how much I'm worth if I don't show them?

Hi Everyone!  Thank you for your comments.  People don't know what we do if we don't tell them!

Tanya, Virginia, Joyce & Chris:  Sorry for the belated response - it has been busy!  Thank you for visiting and your thoughtful comments!

Maureen:  We all do it - once in a while can be relative, too!  I track my pro bonos because they do take time away from my business which puts bread and butter on my table.

Cheryl:  Just write:  No charge w/blessings included!  :)

Sandra:  Complimentary consults and staging services are usually the most stressful!!!

Michelle:  Do you barter with other professionals?  It's an underground economy.

Michelle:  You point out a scenario we all go through with neighbors, friends & family.  How do we delicately let them know this is a business for us - any tips?

Leah:  Freebies!  How often have we done a "freebie" and it turned out to be more work than expected!  Sometimes those are the most challenging!

Ginger:  That would be funny - sending out a pro-bono bill 2 years later - New way to keep in touch!  LOL

Jessica:  There is so much to remember - my honey-do list is OVER THE TOP :)

Wendy:  Thanks for dropping in!

Joelle:  how do you charge for your inventory?  Is it project based or item based?

Emma - Referrals - working those is another science.  How do you do referrals?

Margaret ~ I do this with Agents that give me a lot of consulting business. At the end of the month when I send out my invoices I will do a No Charge on one of the consultations. And yes they really appreciate it.

I love this idea!!!!!!!!  We don't do to much these days for no charge but it certainly gets the point across to those getting a "freebie"!
