Beware of the Lead Foot Family

You can take this post both as a serious post with a pinch of humor but this is something that has really been bugging me for a few years.

What I'm about to tell you below occurred when I lived in my last neighborhood and now it has seemed to follow me to my present neighborhood. I'm starting to wonder if when I move from one place to another there always seems to a the remnants that follows. A perfect example of this is when I live in my last home....during the summer I always seem to see this snake hang out in my yard. All the neighbors around me told me they had never seen one. Well as soon as I moved..... my little friend has seemed to follow me to my present residence....yet it's the same story...no one has ever seen it but me.

Another example is more tailored to the subject at hand. My old neighborhood was located on a small quiet street. The speed limit is 20 MPH and there were young children who play in the street. It seems that most of the people who lived in our subdivision are always in a hurry to go places and they don't seem to agree with the speed limit. They preferred to do 30-40 MPH. At the time I would be outside with my child who was younger at the time and would cringe as the cars would be rolling by like a cheap drag strip and I would literally have to grab my daughter hoping someone wouldn't run us over. I kept telling people that one day something will happen and it did...a 10 yr old was run over by a women who spent more time making sure the ash of her cigarette broke the world record for the longest ash that never fell off in their lap. Luckily the child was only bruised....but it could have been a lot worse.

Well it seems that it has also followed us to our new place. Over the last few years I've noticed a few neighbors who refuse to slow down even when I give them my old hand signal...and you know which one I'm talking about! I've discussed this with a few of my neighbors and they agree.

I've finally figured out who the main culprits are. Apparently we have a family down the block who I now call the Lead Foot family. That's right...lots of lead and every day around 5 pm one of the members of the Lead Foot family decides to drive by at high speeds without any courtesy to slow down. As a matter of fact...every time the husband drives by in his nice shiny car doing a minimum of 40 MPH....I'll give him a really nasty glare while yelling the words...SLOW THE F DOWN! So what does he do? He smiles and waves while driving by. The same goes for the wife who must have taken up the same habit as the other lady...I have actually been able to see the long ash in her mouth even at high speeds.

So I came up with plan....have you ever heard of the rubber ball experiment? Here's how it works...when you see a speeding car go by.....roll the ball into the street and see if the ball gets run over or the car comes to a screeching halt. This way you'll know if It was a child...maybe the driver would get the message.

Unfortunately I never got the chance to test this with our friends the Lead Foot Family. They had to find out the hard way.

such a sad ending

If you feel that the rest of this post is too hard to read or the photos are too gruesome then you may move on. I'm not here to disgust anyone but to make people aware that we have a problem here.

Now for the outcome of this story. The photos you are looking at are blood stains on the street in front of my driveway. One of these photos was taken after I put some bleach down on the areas that were even worse to look at. Thankfully....I never did get to see the body.

slow down scum

Apparently the other night my neighbors cat from across the street was on my lawn when it ran out into the street on it's way home. It never made it. Apparently the lead foots strike again!

They were driving by and ran the cat over and broke it's neck as well as severing it from the head. Pretty disgusting. Well our friends were so guilty that they knocked on the cats owner door to show them what happened. Let's just say it was a very sad ending and I really hope that this time they get it through their thick heads.

the memory in my street

Now we all have the memory of looking at the blood stains in the street as a reminder. But those dam Lead Foots live down the block and probably aren't even remorseful. The next time I see them I'll be sure to make them notice me as they drive by in their glory.

This cost a nice family an animals early death. Next time it could be a child.

Pets are people too.

Shame on them!

Very sorry this happened to your neighbor's cat.

Racing down residential streets is a pet peeve of mine for I had a son hit by a car.We live on a dead end, kids like to race up and down.

I like your ball idea, much better than what I do, for when I see them start racing down the street I go stand in the middle and they have to stop for the crazy lady in the middle of the street.

Why people wait 'until something happens' to get it through their heads. I really hope it made them think. This was someones pet...their family member and it could have been a child.

I can see Sandra doing that...ya know?

Hi Neal, I hate reading stuff like this because there isn't any reason for it to happen in the first place. As a real animal lover this hits close to home.

Sally,

They just drove by like it never happened.

Marti,

It couldn't have come at the worse time...I've been trying to cope with my dog getting old and I can see he doesn't look good and might not be around much longer so when I saw this..it only made me think more about the loss my neighbors are feeling.

We live in a rural area. Years ago around midnight a car was riding on my rear bumper for almost a mile down a dark narrow road. Nowhere for me to pull over. I speed up. He speeds up. I slow down. He slows down. My wife is getting frightened. I turn onto my street. He turns too. We live on a circle. I think he's following me so I go the long way around away from my house. He pulls into my neighbor's driveway.

Now I'm steamed. I circle back and pull into my neighbor's driveway. Of course it's my neighbor and we got along okay before that so I unleash a string of expletives at him.

"Whoa! Lenza lighten up. I have my kids in the car."

"SO DO I, A$$H01E!"

My sister was hit by a car when we were kids. Luckily she wasn't seriously hurt, but my father, who was a police officer, got the call that a child had been hit in his neighborhood, so he raced over only to find out it was his child...

Maybe you can request from the local  jurisdiction  about  speed humps    I know that in our  neighborhood,  nothing  beats  seeing a driver  fly up and bump his head  when  driving over an obstacle.

Neal...

I turned into my neighborhood today and slowed down to 20 mph and this idiot behind me got right on my bumper and tried to push me through the subdivision. "Back off Jack, Slow down!" What are these people thinking?

Hi Andrew,

I guess I was right...you're back somewhat..on a serious note....

That's almost like raod rage with your neighbor.

Kelly,

It's a shame but I thought it was something that should be known...I don't even know their names. I won't say anything to them...complete jerks..the husband also used to speed just to go to the bus stop.

Charlotte,

right after I moved from the old place they did install the speed bumps...my new association has been looking into it but the issue with speed bumps in any area is that the emergency vehicles get damaged by driving fast to get to fires and such...it's catch 22.

Richard,

We all go fast without even knowing it but I live on a curve and you would think a slowdown would happen but it's the opposite..they actually speed up.

Neal - how sad - that they did not learn the lesson that your neighbor lost their pet and that it could have been a child or adult... makes me wonder

Neal, this is so sad.  I lost a cat that way and I was devastated.

I am always waving at people to slow down as we live on the main street  to our development and it's downhill.  We have a neighbor who used to gun her car past the bus stop every morning in the hopes of beating the school bus so she wouldn't have to wait for the kids to get on to get to work.  I saw her one day and very nicely went up to her and said that "I may be wrong, and it may just seem like it, but when we are standing at the bus stop with the kids, you seem to be going very fast and I'm afraid someone will get run over when you go by".  I was gyving her some room for me to be wrong and letting her think about it.  Instead, she looked me in the eye and said:  "I'll tell you what, you keep those f*#king kids out of the street and I'll think about slowing down".   Now she had a son about 3 years old at the time.  I just smiled and said I hoped she'd understand a little better when it was her son standing at the bus stop.  The entire time her son was in elementary school, she stood next to him at the bus stop.  I often wondered if she ever felt like eating her words.  I smile and am polite to her, but I'll never forget that she reacted that way.

Neal, good post but sad.  I understand your frustration.  Speeding in a neighborhood is a pet peeve of mine and I, too, yell at people to slow down.  Every now and then I call the sheriff's office and complain, they thank me. and the next thing I know there are a few of them on motorcycles hiding out in our neighborhood. Stops it for a while, then when it starts back up, I make another call.  Works like a champ.

Neil I had a young kid in my neighborhood that use to like to speed by my house.  One day I was outside and heard the car speeding up the road.  I stepped out in the road and let him have an ear full, and would have kicked his but if he had talked back.  He never came flying by after that again.

Neal, what can I say? We all are surrounded by some idiots that just can't seem to change their ways. Sorry about the cat. The big warning here is next time IT COULD BE a child.

Debra,

I think there are more accidents in your own neighborhood because they don't feel the speed as much at slower speeds.

George,

Come over so I can use you as my guard dog:)

Gary,

I'm not sure if they even realize what they did or is there any real remorse and after all that...I get to see the blood in front of my home.
