My kids are getting older now and I am not constantly faced with finding new 'outings' to keep them entertained (now I want them to stay in!).
One of our favorites, when they were younger was to go to Wolf Trap for the performances at the Theatre-in-the- Woods. I wish I had thought to write about this sooner, because it looks like this is the last week/weekend for performances this summer
Tomorrow through Saturday you can take them to see 'Bash the Trash' Trash Jam and Steve Roslonek (more information at http://www.wolftrap.org/Home/Find_Performances_and_Events/Performance/08TITW/BashtheTrash.aspx.) There are charges for these shows, so go on-line and buy your tickets ahead of time.
My kids really enjoyed every performance we attended--even when they thought they would not!
If you are really organized, you can pack a lunch (in the recommended Squirrel-proof containers) and eat in the meadow following the performance. More advice on planning your outing can be found at: http://www.wolftrap.org/Education/Childrens_Theatre-in-the-Woods/TITW_Plan_Your_Visit.aspx
I recall that bug spray was a necessity and the rules about only bringing water back to the theater are very strictly enforced! Plan accordingly, because you will not be allowed to bring your juice boxes with you.
For those of you who plan ahead, the annual Children's Festival will be held at Wolf Trap on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14. I remember attending this festival as a child...it is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the outdoor offerings of the Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts!
