This past Saturday, just like the first Saturday of every August, was White Linen Night in the Arts District of New Orleans. I haven't seen such a crowd for a long time and although the weather was hot, hot, hot, it didn't appear to keep anyone from coming out, cruising through the art galleries and enjoying food and drinks all along Julia Street.

New Orleans 025 New Orleans 028

My husband and I are lucky enough to have friends who live in a great loft near Julia Street, so we parked by the Piazza d'Italia and headed up 3 flights of stairs to enjoy the rooftop view, some great company and a little wine before taking to the streets with the throngs.

People were packed into the streets and some of the lucky early arrivals managed to grab the tables that were set up along the way. Not all linen, but white was the color du jour for the festivities. Most of the galleries were so crowded that we didn't bother to wait in the long lines for entry, but just peered through the windows at some of the displays.

I know that there are folks who complain about there not being enough local artists represented at these displays and I understand where they are coming from. We have such a wonderful pool of New Orleans talent that it shouldn't be necessary to go outside of the city, but isn't the whole point of the night to expose as many people as possible to as many styles of art as possible, no matter who the artist is?

If I'm torn between two pieces and one is produced locally and one is not, believe me, I will ALWAYS buy local first. That doesn't, however, keep me from enjoying all of the work from artists who have taken the time to bring their visions to life and share them with us.

New Orleans 055

If you weren't there, you missed a good time and should plan to attend next year. Hopefully, I'll see you and we can meet in the streets of NOLA!

Lisa, I love art....all kinds.  I know I would have been one of those people waiting in line to get into some of those galleries.  It looks and sounds like you had a fabulous time.

Lisa, this is so cool!  So many people in white!  I wish I was there too, it looks like so much fun.

I have to tell you though that I read the following incorrectly:  some great company and a little wine before taking to the streets with the throngs.  I read the word throngs as thongs!  Lol!

Carole, this event would be PERFECT for you!  Not only do you get the art, but also the feel of the city with everyone in the streets, meeting and greeting friends and just having a really good time.  You know we like to make a party out of just about anything!

Judi, I managed to contain myself :)

Susan, it was a great time, but so HOT!  Oh, and thanks for making me spit coffee this morning with the thong comment!

Debe, it IS a fun city with so much going on all of the time that you can never be bored :)

Jeremy, well I've never been to Myrtle Beach.  Wanna trade houses for a week? LOL!

Kelly, lots of fun and an annual date with our friends who live downtown - can't beat that.

Lenza, party of 5...

Lisa - That looks like a lot of fun.  We have First Fridays in Charlottesville.  On the first Friday evening of every month are gallery openings and people pack the downtown mall and wander from one to the other.  In the summer the thing to do is eat afterwards at one of the outdoor cafes.

Hi Lisa...Wonderful shots of your wonderful community.  I've had the pleasure of visiting New Orleans three times, twice before Hurricane Katrina and once after while down in Biloxi/Gulfport, Mississippi as a Red Cross volunteer.

You are in a great place.

Lisa, That sounds like so much fun. Loved your pictures.  I liked your comment about buying a local artist work if you love 2.  Did you end up buying anything? You'll have to share if you did!  What a crowd!

Lynda, it's just a tad warm here in August :)  LOL @ 4lbs!!

C, thanks for popping in...I figured you would like the art :)

Valiant, I haven't heard any recent news about the Orpheum.  I know it was sold post Katrina, but I don't have an update.  The news about the growing market depends on who you ask :)  The recent news about the population growth is skewed by the fact that so many people left the city and are just now returning.  It's still smaller than in 2005.

Kim, I tell everyone who hasn't been here to come on down - it's the most amazing city in the world to me!

Jessica, sshh...don't tell anyone, but I have fun no matter where I go :)

Pam, you do that every month?  What fun!

Kate, thank you.  Not just for the kind words but for your volunteer work as well.  The entire region would not be where it is now if not for the tireless work of so many others just like you!

Mana, I will give you the all around, up and down tour and take you to all of my favorite places!  Can I come to your beach afterwards?  ;p

Elizabeth, I am all about buying local, even if sometimes it costs just a bit more.  I didn't buy anything this time...I still have prints that need to be framed from past outings :)

Marc, he did!  Looks like he is heading this way.  Do you want him to pick you up?  LOL!

Lisa, you just made me drool. This is so fine and your pictures are fabulous. I was just visiting with my daughter today about making a trip to the Fine Arts Museum. This makes me so jealous. I even have the perfect white dress for this event! Wow, thanks for sharing. It's wonderful.

Teresa, you are so right that supporting local businesses make the entire experience more personable. I would much rather do business with someone who is a member of my community than a big box store!

Deb, LOL!  First Saturday, August 2009....

Joan, there is always next year!

Richard, that's too long.  You should come visit again :)

Gary, thank you - we are full of life, contrary to many reports!

Debbie, thanks!  Art is most definitely alive here.

Mana, now you're talking ;p

Diane, it's really cool to walk through the streets filled with white.  If someone wants to stand out it's pretty easy - wear anything BUT white!

Lillie, welcome to the Rain and good luck on opening your LA office soon.  We'd love to have you back :)

Lisa,

It looks like an interesting place to go and have fun while also adding some culture. We definitely love white colors here as the darker colors absorb our very strong suns rays....nice photos. I have never been there but might have to make a trip one day.

Lisa,

Looks like the Art Event was a lot of fun.  I have not been to NOLA since the 1st Mardi Gras after Katrina.  I stayed with my friends, Al & Steve, who live over on Bourbon St.  I'm overdue for a visit.  Have a great weekend.
