When a person decides to build a log home, one of the first things they do is research floor plans and there must be a thousand free and/or low cost floor plan sites out there. In fact, the phrase "log home floor plans" is one of the most popular keyword phrases that brings people to the Log Home Directory and the reason we recently launched our Floor Plan Showcase.

This is a great educational experience, but oftentimes people make the mistake in thinking that because they have a floor plan, they don't need to bother with hiring an architect.  This can be a big mistake because the architect is the owner's representative.  A leading architect in the timber frame business is Jeremy Bonin of Bonin Architects & Associates, PLLC, and he was kind enough to author a blog post for us about this very subject.  Rather than repeat what he had to say, visit our Log Home bLog and get the whole story.

Something to keep in mind if you have a client that is considering building a log home on that piece of property you're showing!

HI Tom,

Great article. Jeremy has provided a great outline of the benefits of hiring an architect. Especially when structural changes are made it is extremely important to have that kind of expertise standing behind the prints. A good design is one thing, a sturdy structure is another.

Jeremy says, "‘Green’ or ‘sustainable’ design is an increasingly important design practice. In general terms it can be considered a way to reduce, negate or even reverse the negative impacts that the construction of buildings and their use and maintenance have on the environment." I am very fond of this approach and believe it is smart building practice. Jeremy also discusses site analysis and environmental impact studies that can be performed by an architect. These are very important reasons to include architectural services in a "package!"

Great post! I am interested in learning more from you. I'd like to invite you to cross post this in the ECO AllStars Group and join us for some fun in the rain! The green ideas will be welcome!
