Bailey

"Hello, I'm Bailey and I had a very exciting adventure!

My mom and dad cam home from Petco and gave my brother Baxter and I some raw hide treats. We had been very good dogs, so we deserved a special treat.

Well, I was very happy and gobbled my treat down as fast as I could, hoping to get another right away. I tried to swallow and couldn't. I started to gasp and then cough. That raw hide had lodged itself in my throat! I started to make strange noises that my parents didn't recognize.

They realized I was choking and jumped into action! Dad picked me up and tried to give me the Hymlick Maneuver. Then he started patting my back like you would to a human who was choking. Then they took turns sticking their fingers down my throat to grab the object.

Mom was on the phone with the emergency vet. It was night time, so my regular guy was closed. The hot line said to come in right away. I was gasping and coughing and making horrible noises just trying to get that thing out of my throat.

Mom and dad wasted no time getting my leash and loading me into the car. I was in the middle of the back seat with my head in between their shoulders. They both looked really scared. Oh boy, another trip to that terrible place!

Just as the engine started, I felt a tickle in my throat and let out a giant BURP! It felt so good that it was out of my throat. You should have seen their faces. They were both so stunned and relieved that they just started to laugh!

We didn't get to go for a ride that day and I have not tasted a raw hide since!"

Bye for now, Bailey :-)

Lara, what a scary story!  I quit giving my pups these awhile ago for the SAME EXACT REASON.  Scary how close we can come to losing a best pal.  Glad yours is ok!

Sara, I'm glad your puppies are okay too. They should not be selling them if they are so easy to choke on. My vet also warned me against cow hooves because they can break the dogs' teeth. We stopped using them because they smelled like old, wet tennis shoes (stinky.)

Joe, thanks for your kind words to Bailey. Your Bailey sounds gorgeous! Can you please post a picture? I bet she is really smart and very energetic!
