Well, I joined Facebook a few weeks back in the hopes of somehow leveraging it towards a networking tool for my real estate business. I had fears that it would be the furthest thing from that and instead turn into a high school reunion forum. At this point, it is officially a runaway train as a high school reunion meeting place! I guess that's OK, but I had higher hopes for it in terms of growing my real estate business. It is kind of strange, becoming online "friends" on facebook with people I haven't seen or spoken to in 20 years, yet I remember their names, along with images in my mind of what they used to look like, and they remember me. And now I'm one of "those guys" that for some strange reason has a little less hair today than I had in high school! Whatever! Pretty funny, I guess! Anyway, I guess there is no mistaking how much I treasure Active Rain and Localism compared to Facebook when it comes to my real estate career!

Hi Kirk,

I tend to agree with your accessment but believe, at leas for me, that I have not yet learned to maximize its potential.  There are a number of business options such as linking to a "Linked-in" profile, a variety of real estate groups where listings can be posted, etc.  It takes lots of time, trial and error and patience which I haven't had.  I'm still hopeful that Facebook will prove as great an asset as Wanna Network or Yaerd.com.  If you learn any new tricks on Facebook please post them and I will do the same.

Ciao!

Maybe I'm too old, but I haven't seen too many HS people on there.

Well after hearing time and time again I should be in Facebook, I signed up a couple of days ago. It's good to hear opinions regarding it so I'll know what to expect.

I joined and had a "stalker" so I had to go private.  I guess that means you can't see me?

Kirk,

Thanks for the post. looking at the demographics of facebook, I never thought that it would be the vehicle to improve my real estate business. On the other hand a good social outlet, if that is what your looking for. The great thing about ActiveRain is that you get both. I have developed business relationships here and made some friends, even renewed friendships.

I signed up but havent really used this tool. Too much to do with too little time I guess. Im sure I will get around to it and see my HS buddies.

Although I think facebook is more of a chat room for lonely hearts and a school house full of over aged dweebs I seem to keep going back there...and recently was found by many people from school who I haven't seen since I started shaving:)

You should look at Facebook as just one more networking tool.  You never know who you will meet or who they know and how that will lead to business.  Keep an open mind.  Maybe some of your old high school connections will need your services and now they will remember you.  Good luck.

Facebook is OK, but I think like all the rest it is jus about being out there, being everywhere and talking to everyone.  Used to be you handed cards out every where you went and knocked on doors to get business.  Now it is spending time in front of the computer expanding you presence and contributing to online communities.
