When you sell a house do you give your clients a thank you / closing gift?  If so, what do you give?

I, more times than not, will give my customers a token of my appreciation.  The "token" will vary from client to client.  Most customers will get a gift certificate to Home Depot or something of that nature.  However, I had close friends of mine buy and sell two VERY expensive homes with me in 2004.  I gave the family (well kids) a play structure for the new back yard.  It was an expensive gift.  But these customers have given me millions of dollars of business.  I looked at it as an investment in my future.  That investment has paid off.  They want to list their house in the spring of 2007 and upsize.

An agent I know always pays for a home warranty for her customers.  She says that she writes a personal check at the closing table so that her clients know that she is personally paying for the "gift".

One of the very seasoned agents in my office is 100% against giving gifts to his customers.  He said, "When I go to the dentist, the dentist doesn't give me a thank you gift for my business".  He thinks that it devalues what we do for a living.  In some instances, I understand where he is coming from.

However, for me, I give gifts.

i rarely give them anything but good service. I do sometimes if I really connect. i do however give something to people that give me leads like gift certificates to a local eatery to say thanks. They go out of the way to give you business. The would be a good blog topic. Eric

I give home depot or lowes cards to some clients, bottles of wine or grey goose to others, It really depends on the client!  I really don't think there is anything wrong with it.  I feel it personalizes your relationship and it never hurts for them to remember you.

I think gift cards are good gifts and easily spendable.  The best gift probably after that is your presence in their lives for years to come for repeat business and referrals.

As you know I give a small gift from Crate & Barell to my customers.  They seem to like it.  I have been told that many mortgage reps don't give anything.

I like to personalize and give something I know they like...Like Joshua giving Grey Goose (for my drinkers- or wine) , or if they have kids a personalized name plaque for their new bedroom door, or if they are arriving to an empty home maybe some basic groceries like bread/milk/sandwich stuffers/soda and beer, and good ole toilet paper!

We have a local specialty shop that can put great baskets together with homemade (really) quiche or pies also).

Closings the next few weeks may get a mum plant or Fall theme flag.

Here's another great idea.

I've introduced a closing gift that so far, knock on wood, has caught on real well. It has been on the market for a year now. Here's the scoop:  I produce custom change-of-address cards featuring an artistic rendering of the buyer's new home. Realtors email me a digital photograph which I then retouch and render. The results have been gorgeous as I put a lot of time into the retouching. I've fixed roofs, added sky, fixed yards, removed obstacles -- even added potted plants to porches, whatever it takes to make the most humble home look great.

The cards come packaged in a gold gift box with clear view cover and a bow. I also do 5x7 notepaper with a thumbnail of the home which is great for housewarming gift thank you notes and 8 x10 enlargements in a black photo folder. The cards come packaged in boxes of 25 with envelopes and start at $64.00 for 25. Hopefully from my description you understand that a good deal of the cost is in the labor of retouching. The price falls at each quantity break. I'd appreciate your taking a look at www.wevemovedgifts.com and letting me know what you think. It would be a great help and I know you'll like the product. I even turn these around when needed in 24 hours!! I have customers all over the country that tell me their clients love them, and everyone can use the cards.

By the way, since a lot of you seem to want to give ongoing gifts, what would you think if I offered the notepaper so that agents could periodically send another box of stationery to their clients?

I'm glad to send samples if you'll email me.
