Well, ain't I embarrassed. Used to think I had a pretty good handle on basic web design. I've done my personal site for years and am now the office webmaster. Turns out I missed the day they talked about screen resolution. Today I discovered, to my horror, that almost no one uses the same high resolution as my Dell laptop - not even close.
Also discovered that what looks great at 1280x 800 is butt ugly at the resolutions most people use.
Profit from my pain - wire your site into Google Analytics and you'll see that about half of the world is browsing at 1024x768 (or less) and design for that.
