I was listening to Sports Talk radio from the Boston market earlier in the week. WEEI 850 on your dial here is where you'll find some great sports talk. The two talk show hosts were talking about Curt Schilling and his new blog. Curt has a wordpress blog and he talks about a whole lot of great stuff every die hard baseball fan would want to hear or read about, in this case.

Curt Schilling's BlogWhat I like about Curt's blog is that he speaks his mind and tells it like he sees it. I also think you will be able to read some great insights to baseball that you normally wouldn't read in sports magazines or your local newspaper's sports section.

After yesterday's game against the Baltimore Orioles he talks about how he pitched and how he banters back and forth with Red Sox fan favorite Kevin Millar. Kevin Millar coined the phrase "Cowboy Up" during the Red Sox run to the World Series in 2004. A fan favorite for sure. Curt describes how he pitches to Millar yesterday and then Millar responds to Curt and Curt posts Millar's comment on his blog. Good stuff for every baseball fan.

I think you all would agree Curt has some great causes he promotes. One which I have experienced first hand is ALS. My aunt Ann McGillicuddy passed away from this awful disease.

For those of you unfamiliar with ALS it is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. From the ALS website "Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Yet, through it all, for the vast majority of people, their minds remain unaffected."

He also promotes Shade a foundation to help skin cancer and melanoma survivors, founded by his wife Shonda.

He also supports Barry Zito's cause Strikeouts for Troops.

Curt also played for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ironically he started off his career in the Red Sox organization by being drafted in the 1986 amatuer draft.

Schilling is a class act... and he definitely has the gift of gab, too, so it's not surprizing that he is blogging (it IS a great blog, too!)

PS... go WILD THING! Wild Thing

Thanks Michelle for stopping by and yes the Schill sure can talk. I loved it a couple of yrs.a go when the Red Sox brass came out to support Kerry he came out and supported the President. It was quite humorous. The thing I like about him is he is not afraid to speak his mind. He won't back down from anyone.

Jay, one of the great things about Curt Schilling like you said is that he speaks his mind, and one of the bad things about Curt Schilling is that he speaks his mind.  Curt sometimes falls a little to much in love with the sound of his voice.  It would be great if he could learn when to stop because he is worth listening to most of the time.

Jay,

How very awful for your family, having an aunt pass due to ALS. I have a limited knowledge of this disease and cannot imagine what it must feel like to be in that condition with your mind being unaffected. (ps, guess I found the redsox patriot fan:)

Eddy thanks for commenting and I appreciate your kind thoughts.  Do you really think Schilling will be first ballot? I might agree considering what he accomplished in '04 with the Sox.

George that cracks me up what's funny is you are absolutely correct.

Since e-mail won't work "up" here I figured I'd try commenting on your blog.

I'm going swimming for a little while and should be back up here in my room in an hour or so...

You are very welcome............

Jay yeah first ballot for Curt isnt a long shot. He took the Phillies to the world series in the early 90s then we won with Arizona and was a part of the sox squad that finally broke the curse of the bambino.

His numbers are pretty solid as well

I loved Curt when he was down here with the Phillies and he truly seems to be a classy guy.  He used to always call into the local sports station from his car while he was driving on 95...very open and honest!

Whenever Curt is interviewed on any major sports network he is very honest and says what he has to say. Most athletes dont do that nowadays.

Eddy, I forgot about his ring with the Phillies. It makes more sense to what you say now, Opening day is tomorow and he is starting.

Carole, glad you are enjoying his blog. Don't you wish a few more athletes would do the same? He is defintly an outspoken individual.

Ravi, He still listens to the sports talk shows here in Boston too and calls in periodically. He tells 'em like he sees 'em.

Eddy,  a lot more ball ball players need to be a little more open and honest.

Thanks all, Jay

I lived in Philly when Curt came and in Phoenix when he helped the D-Backs win the 01 Series.  He didn't get the nickname "Red Light Curt" for being shy in front of the camera. I'm not surprised he's blogging.

Did you know, Tommy Lasorda has a blog?  I don't think he's posted in a few months, though.

Curt's "Shade" foundation is quite generous.  My wife contacted it and received over 300 packets of sunscreen at absolutely no cost for our golf tourney for my daughter's school...no questions asked.

Shade foundation sounds like they do care and what a great idea for your daughter's school.

I'm completely ignorant about local baseball, let alone Boston's, but I really enjoyed reading this post. Fab job! A great addition to Boston localism. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Teri for stopping by and commenting. As a sport fanatic I wish more athletes would take the time to interact with their fans.
