Aloha from the Garden Island Kauai

8-3 Kauai anahola houseAloha from the Garden Isle - Kauai. As some of you know, I'm here to get married - tomorrow, as a matter of fact. What an awesome spot. I've not been to Kauai before but we will definitely be back again.

viewSo We've rented this great beach house in Anahola, which is about halfway between the airport at Lihue and Hanalei/Princevill. I'm sitting here on the balcony off the master suite - which takes up the 2nd floor of this house, and the view is stunning. The green lawn rolls down to a flowered break and right to the beach on Anahola Bay. The Bay itself is a crescent probably no more than 2 miles wide from tip to tip, but somewhat protected with a beach of sand that's as fine as flower. It's a long shallow reach into the ocean making it great for wading and swimming but not an easy place to fish and no structure for ideal snorkeling.

great roomSomeone commented on an earlier post that Kauai is so quiet they get Island fever after just a few days here. Ahhhhh, no. Not been a problem. Of course the fact that we're here with a housefull of family probably helps - including my fiance' Lisa's  2 1/2 year old granddaughter McKenna, who keeps things hopping. There's 8 of us sharing this beautiful beach house including my son and daughter, her boyfriend and Lisa's daughter, granddaughter and her fiance'.

tOne of the first things you notice on Kauai as you exit the airport is the number of roosters and chickens wandering around. I don't know the story behind these birds yet but they're everywhere. The wander the roadways, they stalk through the yard as if they owned it, they're in the trees, in the gazebo, we're warned no to feed them or they'll come right into the house and become a general nuisance. They're actually kind of fun to have around until about 5 a.m. dThat's when the sun comes up and all the roosters do what they're famous for. They raise complete and unholy hell for about 45 minutes and then go back to sleep. Of course by then all the other birds have been awakened as well so they set up a general cacaphony. Oh well, shouldn't waste a minute of these glorious days anyway. Friggin roosters.

fishYesterday the boys and I went fishing with Captain Jeff on the Breakaway. There was just the 4 of us and 2 others so it was a great time. We had no luck trolling for Marlin but we each snagged a couple Yellowtail Tuna in the 6 - 8 pound range. We brought home a few pounds of great fillets which made wonderful fresh tuna taco's last night and will feed us a couple more times this week. YUM. I caught one that fought like a demon but when I got him on board it was just 1/2 a fish. Apparently his struggles has attracted a shark who made off with his lower half leaving me with the head and little else.

beachWell, enough of my ramblings for today. My son has breakfast ready. We're headed for a luau later today and going kayaking and snorkeling tomorrow in addition to getting married. We're getting married on the beach right behind our house as you couldn't ask for a prettier area. Well, you could, and you could find more beautiful areas in plentiful supply within minutes - but this ain't bad and it's certainly convenient. Plus we rented 2 convertible Mustangs - which are great fun but don't offer much in the way of backseat room so no need to travel if we don't need to.

sunsetYesterday we had lunch at Bubba's Burgers in Kapaa. Their motto is 'We cheat tourists, drunks and attorneys'. I like that. I may adopt that as my own motto - think Coldwell Banker would allow that on my business card? Yeah, you're right. Mahalo.

What a lovely place to have a wedding.  My granddaughter was married on the beach at Key West.  Everyone was barefoot.

Enjoy the day and good luck.

Gene - that was me with the comment about quiet. Of course, I did not bring my posse;^)

Bubba's is good, really good. There is also a great pizza place in some small town past Poipu Bay.

Have a great wedding and honeymoon. Keep the riot quiet.

Gene, I feel like I just went on vacation, just by reading your blog!

Thank you so much!  I sincerely needed the respite; it's been a tough day!

The pictures are amazing!  I just want to jump into those idyllic images.  Either that or take the next plane up there...

Your daughter is so stunningly beautiful.  I've seen several pictures of her in your blogs and I must admit that her face is truly enchanting!

Congratulations, my man!  What a babe you're marrying!  There is no way she is a grandmother!  When did she start fooling around, at two?

You're really packing in the action:  getting married, going kayaking AND snorkeling tomorrow?  Now, that's multi-tasking!

My best wishes for an amazing day tomorrow!  May God bless your union!

Gene, you're the best!  Congratulations!

Thank you all for the wishes. We had a terrific day - we were barefoot too Lenn. It's the best. And the granddaughter was bare-assed most of the time which is OK too. I know there are lovely island over on your side of the country too Mirela and we're dying to make it to the Caribbean one of these days but in the meanwhile, this place don't suck.

The lady who has bee our Exec for the past 20 years just moved to Oahu to be the Hawaii state Exec 10 days ago. We were hoping Nancy could make it over to join us for the wedding but she was pretty busy with the new job and all. Hoping she can join us for dinner on Maui next week. She's dreamed of moving to Hawaii most of her life and finally got the great opportunity with the state association here. Tough gig.
