yourstreet

The Yourstreet site is local news, information and conversations mapped to the street level for over 50000 locations and every zip code in the US.

YourStreet connects you to the local information that impacts you most – what’s going on in your town, your neighborhood, and your street.

YourStreet is a website that will map news articles to your home town! The company’s proprietary algorithm aggregates articles from tens of thousands of news sources every day, interprets the articles, determines their location, and displays them as locations on an interactive Google map. YourStreet also allows users to add their own articles and conversations, connecting people at the local level.

So here is where the value comes in! After creating your blog post at Active Rain or outside blog send it to Yourstreet. This is one of the better ways to pick up backlinks for your blog.

For those who are not familiar with backlinks, they are one of the back bones of search engine optimization (SEO). The more quality backlinks you get, along with good content, will be what drives your site to rank higher in Google and other search engines. It is super easy to add your posts to the site as you just supply a small snippet of your post along with the link to the post and a title - it is that simple. It takes 3 minutes max!

See how I have added posts from my Active Rain blog to the site by clicking on the link for mystreet Hopkinton Massachusetts.

See my profile for yourstreet here: Bill Gassett yourstreet profile.

You will notice you are able to add your professional bio along with your website!

Adding Your Blog To YourStreet:

You can also partner with yourstreet and have your Active Rain or other blog be syndicated to their site if you do not feel like manually entering your posts.

They will soon have an automated form to add your blog to their system, but for now simply use the feedback form linked to at the bottom of any page and send them your name and the URL of your blog. That’s all you need to do.

If your blog looks appropriate, they wiil add it to their system. When you publish a new post on your blog it will then automatically be mapped and a brief summary will appear on YourStreet with a link back to your blog!

One of my other favorite sites for creating backlinks at the Local level is the Topix News site. See my post on Topix here:

Increase your Real Estate blogs readership & SEO through Topix.com

I absolutley love this site and you will too! Apply to be an editor and post your blogs there. You will see your posts indexed in Google giving yourself more online presence!

Thanks Bill, once again you rock on finding good sites. I'll go check it out and also how to link from here to there. How old is the site? Sounds somewhat like outside in from your description. Do you use that ? I have a profile there but can't figure out the geo tagging to add articles. They have sent me information on it but I just don't 'get it"

Hi Ellie - I just added my blog to the site yesterday but by using the mybloglog tracking system you can see when people visit your blog. I ahve a number of visits from Topix and a couple yesterday from the Yourstreet site. Just as important you will pick up backlinks to the posts you enter into the sites.

I would have to say that topix is one of the best sites I have found. It is all "do follow" and I get an lots of backlinks + stand alone results in the serps:)

Bill, I just went over there (YourStreet) to sign in and have a look see, and this is what I found in the terms of service:

Commercial Use is Prohibited
The YourStreet website is made available for your personal, non-commercial use only. You may not use the YourStreet website to sell products or services or drive traffic to your website for commercial reasons. You may not resell, reuse, repurpose or reformat any content from the YourStreet website. If you would like to make use of the YourStreet website for commercial purposes, you must enter into an appropriate agreement with YourStreet in advance.

I have a feeling they will look upon a real estate website as being for commercial purposes.  I didn't upload anything to them yet, but have sent an inquiry via their feedback form.  I'll let you know the response I receive.

Kris - I am going to disagree with you but certainly let me know if you find out otherwise on Yourstreet. I disagree for two reasons. You are adding blog posts about things to do with Real Estate just like you would with Localism. You are not technically selling a product. The intention of that statement is to not have a bunch of people dropping in adds for Viagra and anything else spammers promote.

The other reason I know it is fine is that the site has picked up other Real Estate blogs without the person even knowing or entering them in. One of the members here, Charles McDonald, went to the site yesterday and found posts from his outside blog in the site. He had never entered them...the site picked them up on it's own. How cool is that!!!

Do you copy and paste a blog from A/R and put it in blogspot and/or yourstreet ?  When you do, does it mess up the photos ?   Was struggling this morning.

Bill:

At what point do we dilute the search engines ability to give real relevant to search questions?

I know we wants to backlinks, but are we just clogging the results. Won't you get a duplicate content penalty and only receive the back link strength?

Richard

Teri - I would try again. It took me a few tries and I no am the editor for 5 towns in my area. Trust me it is worth it.

Richard - You are not going to dilute the results. Google will pick the most relevant information...that is why content will always be king. You will not get a duplicate content penalty as you are linking to a story. You are not copying and pasting an entire article. You will be submitting a snipet. Google will see the source as the original author. Google will also see a link from another site(yourstreet or Topix) which is good. It makes your post more relevant. I hope I have explained this well enough.

Bill,

I signed up on yourstreet and have been syndicating to topix for over a year now.  Do you see any traffic to your site from these services?  I haven't noticed any from Topix and it looks like most of the link pages do follow, but are only a PR 2, so the SEO benefit isn't huge, but is there.

7:32am • #94
438,037 Points 47 Featured Posts Outside Blog

Hi Daniel - Yes I have been seeing more and more traffic from Topix. I track it through my bloglog. The PR of the pages I am the editor for are PR3 which isn't that bad. It is harder and harder to find sites that pass good PR. The posts themselves also get good indexing from Google as well. I just signed up for Yourstreet and have seen a little traffic but no where near as much as Topix.

I'll have to dust off my old editor cap and weed through my Topix area.  Traffic is traffic and it all adds up, a lot of people can't seem to wrap their heads around that and want instant results.  Slow and steady wins the race and little tricks like these give you an extra couple of steps ahead of the competition. I just started a new site (awendawliving.com) and need to go back and remember all the tricks that got my first site to PR4 and duplicate.

Daniel I would certainly take a look at Topix again and start adding your blog post. It works!

There is just so much out there to use that I almost don't know where to turn first...how do you decide?  What works and what doesn't?  This is great info but I'm afraid I will not retain the information....

Sonja - I find that if I try something and it looks good I will come back and use it. Give Yourstreet a whirl and see if it works for your business.

Bill- How do you deal with public comments on Topix that are negative - like " I didn't know this was an advertising forum! Ridiculous!"  I've received some of those- cannot delete them.

Wendy - I never seen that so I am not sure what to say. I will tell you though that there are a lot of nut cases in that forum. I guess I would justbe polite...in the end they will look like fools:)

Hi Frank - If you have been accepted as an editor there should be a little red box up in the upper left hand corner. If you click on this button it will ask you to add the URL for your story. It is easy as that.
