Colorado is a Hail of a place!

Colorado is one "hail" of a place. Pun intended. With the huge demand for roofing in our area due to the hail storms, high winds and tornados. I see dump truck after dump truck of shingles being torn off roofs to make way for the new shingles; I have often thought about the fact that there has to be a way to recycle those old shingles instead of putting them into the landfills. Pueblo currently has an even larger problem with the closure of one major landfill and dump fees sky rocketing along with the cost of shingles. I am very happy to see a company that has found a way to recycle those old shingles. They grind them up and mix them into their hot-mix asphalt for paving. Wow, think about this you could be driving on your old roof. Let's hope they got all the nails. This company is offering reduced rates for dumping to make it attractive to roofing contractors to come to them.

The only unfortunate side to this story is that this particular company is in Henderson, CO and it is the only one in Colorado that I am aware of recycling shingles, however, it is a huge step in the right direction, let's hope other companies see the benefit of this and will bring the process closer to our area. According to an article in the August 2008, Colorado Roofing Association Newsletter 95% of all roofing material waste goes into the landfills along with pre-consumer waste, they are talking approximately 9 million tons of waste annually going into our landfills. Factor in the cost of asphalt and recycling makes even more sense than just reducing waste.

Kudos to Gary Stillmunkes, of Asphalt Specialties Company, inc., in Henderson, CO. The world could use more innovative companies like you!

I hope that other roofing companies will also make the leap that the Henderson, CO company has made.

Dena, I hope other companies will soon join them.  I wasn't aware Colorado had such violent hail storms.

Good news, Allied Building Products in Denver and Fort Collins are researching how to encourage this, maybe even offer a drop point to make it happen. At the very least we are trying to get the word out to our roofing contractors that it exists.
