The myth of all set

Yesterday there was a post on here by the user maitski about excuses realtors make to avoid being the best they can be.  It had a list of "if only's" and it reminded me of a sermon I heard in church about "the myth of all set".

The myth of all set goes like this (and I am making this up as I go along but following the jist of the sermons, so hoepfully I get the point accross).

A young woman says to her Mom one day of her future, you know Mom, if I can just graduate from the right college I will be all set.  Before she has even graduated she says to her mother, you know Mom graduating from the right school is great, but if I can just get the right job I'll be all set.  Shortly after that she is sitting at her great job one day and she calls up her Mom and says you know Mom, if I could just meet the right guy, I would be all set.  Time goes by, and she is dating a great guy, she thinks to herself if I could just get this guy to marry me I would be all set.  Soon she is planning her wedding and she thinks to herself you know if we could just buy a great house we would be all set.  As she is moving into her new home she says to her husband, you know babe, if we could just have a baby we would be all set.  As she is expecting her first son, she says to her unborn son (you know pregnant women talk to their unborn children all the time, don't be shocked) you know if Daddy just made a little more money I could stay home with you and we would be all set.  As she is watching her son one day, and expecting her second child she thinks to herself if we could get a bigger house we would be all set.  She brings home her new baby, into her bigger new house, and she says to her husband you know if we can just make it until the kids go back to school things will be so much easier because I can go back to work and we will be all set.  As she brings her youngest child to school on her way to work one day, she says to him you know if I could just go back to school and get a better degree we would really be (you guessed it all set).

This story could go on and on.  And the truth is I don't have to tell the story to any of you.  We are all so obsessed with the next thing, the next goal we sometimes miss the beauty and the accomplishment in where we are today.  I may be the worst offender when it comes to this and I try to remind myself all the time of the myth of all set.  If you live your life from one all set to the next you miss out on all the fun of accomplishing your goals and dreams.  That poor girl missed out on the fun of her graduation, her wedding, the births of her children, etc. because she was obsessed with the next big thing each time!

If I could just remember to enjoy my life the way it is today, I would really be all set!

Colleen, that's a lesson we all learn the hard way.  daily awareness of being thankful of where I am in my life and the blessings I have is usually enough to break the habit for me.  definitely takes a conscience effort to un-learn the "all set" mentality.  nice post.

Unfortunately by the time we are indeed ALL SET, we realize there is not much time left.... your post makes me want to turn off my laptop and pay more attention to the little boy sitting next to me!!!
