The really unfortunate thing about how most business owners are using the social web today is that they're applying "old" techniques to a new eco-system and results are suffering.

Further, many are also trying to measure and define results from social media with a worn out template.

"When will my social media efforts be profitable?"  This is exactly the wrong philosophy, wrong question and all together wrong approach.  Sure, I understand the need to make money and generate a return and here's a key influencing factor.

Old School Approach: "Markets" - what we do together became "Marketing" what we do TO each other.

New School Social Media Approach:  Exposes those who do not know how to build rapport, relationships, trust, value, share and hold a conversation for longer than five minutes without saying "PLEASE BUY MY PRODUCT OR SERVICE."

We see this phenomena in many industries, people have lost the ability to communicate with meaning.  In the Real Estate Industry, we see a tremendous amount of "push" marketing.  In order to compete, agents pay the "advertising tax," this is what one does when they have little to offer in terms of real meaning.  Expensive approach with little return as the audience is ignoring this "tired" approach.

Consider challenging every assumption you've ever had with respect to how you build your business and you'll be in the right head space to listen, learn and respond in a social media context.

I'm an ex-educator that is on the "shy" mode.  I moved here from the U.S. and I'll tried working at mingling more, but it's difficult, since I'm in a new country and I don't have the social network in this community yet.  I like talking to people that have something to say, but just not small talk.  That tends to drive me crazy.  When I work with people I give them all the information they ask for and some more and I wait to see if they call back.  In that respect, I'm not pushing, but I'm originally from New York City, so it's in my blood.  I'll try to be a little more friendly, especially here in Saint John, New Brunswick, the people here are "SUPER FRIENDLY"...

                  Thanks for the info....

Hey, Walter.

Don't give away all of our secrets! LOL

I'm continually amazed when I see someone try to use what I call NEM—in honor of Beatles and NEMS Enterprises, but in this case it means New Era Marketing. I'll convince them to do something new and untraditional. After a week they come back and say that it doesn't work. NEM works, but one still has to do it P&C (persistently and consistently), just like blogging and commenting here at Active Rain, in order to be successful.

Hey, Anne-Marie. I love your little kitty! She looks very much like my little Zoey, a DSH ginger tabby.

Russel, thanks for your comments.

Although I believe that you're suggesting that I'm talking about "marketing" as a new tactic.  I'm not.  In fact, I'm suggesting that one become simply someone who learns "people skills" rather than a new marketing technique.  Then apply those people skills to an online culture that requires transparency.  No secrets.  As with all aspects of business persistence and consistency are probably good habits with respect to "human to human" communication.
