Networking Sites

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

Now, back to business.  I've noticed that having profiles on various networking sites is becoming more and more popular.  I, for one, have profiles on FaceBook, LinkedIn, ActiveRain (of course) and a few others. These are the questions I have for everyone regarding these sites:

  • Do you have profiles on multiple sites?  If so, which ones?
  • Do you actually get business, probably in the form of referrals, from these sites/ your profile?  If so, what percentage of your business does it make up?
  • Which one is your favorite?
  • Do you mix your personal profiles (MySpace, for instance) with your professional profiles?  Do you use one profile for both purposes?

As we all know, our business is all about networking and the connections you have.  Plus, businesses are also moving to being more and more Internet based.  I think this is just one more reason we all must embrace Technology.

This may sound silly, but I think it's important to know if these sites are legitimate lead generation tools.  Also, this poses a great question for all agents, Do You Know Your Numbers???  As an agent, you should.  And if you don't, your assistant better!

Amber.  I have profiles on the sites you mentioned and I am trying to add to more.  As to getting any business?  I have yet to see any, but I believe it will come.  I am really excited about the prospects of Localism and its opening up to the public.  Good luck and keep posting!

Hey Amber, I'm on several of these sites, but not all. I find that if you stay on top of things, i do have both personal and business on my facebook account - but make sure nothing is too "risky." Also, I do know some other agents who have made 2 accounts to draw the line specifically for that.

Also, be careful with some of these as lead generating tools. Sometimes emailing/messaging can  be considered SPAM and you can get a block on your account.

Just my 2 cents! goodluck!!

Several business associates have built a big network on Plaxo as well. I use Linkedin -- it was easy to start and I had more associates there to connect to.  Make it a profitable day!

  • Do you have profiles on multiple sites?  If so, which ones? I have accounts on Linked In, Plaxo, Facebook (1 for personal use and 1 for business), Active Rain.....experimented on Tweeter, but canclled when I didn't 'get' it.
  • Do you actually get business, probably in the form of referrals, from these sites/ your profile?  If so, what percentage of your business does it make up? I have yet to get a direct referral, but I think that what I have learned from reading and responding to comments, joining forums, etc has been worth its weight in gold!
  • Which one is your favorite? Facebook - I love th ability to keep track on everyone and network at the same time. Its less formal than LinkedIn, so I am a little more free with who I link with.
  • Do you mix your personal profiles (MySpace, for instance) with your professional profiles?  Do you use one profile for both purposes? I have separate profiles for business and personal.

N.B Facebook has started to be indexed in Google......noticed this today!

I have accounts on LinkedIn, Facebook, AR, and also on Zillow and Trulia, as well as Twitter and my own website.  I have not received any referrals to my knowledge, but did get a phone call out of the blue from someone I did not know, and I have listed their property.  I  am not sure how she found me, but I do believe that social networking is going to be around for a long time.  I feel that not only will I receive business from it, but I have already established relationships and garnered a wealth of information.  I think for me AR is the best by far.  I try not to mix too much personal with my business profile.  I do want people to know me as a person, but would never put certain things on any of my profiles that would do anything to hurt my professionalism.

I have accounts on many of these accounts and generally use the same business profile for each.  I do try to link information for these sites in an attempt to create some traffic to my web site.  I also direct email to my personal account from every site I use.

I'm using all the normal ones I guess and have yet to get any leads off of them, but I've only been actively pursuing it for 6 months and I would say that's not a very long time.  I bought a spam machine for myspace and added about 600 new friends of friends (I did it that way so they didn't report me as a spammer).  I have had some interested parties regarding a listing of mine through facebook and myspace but nothing fruitful just yet... then again, I live in Pittsburgh, PA so it'll be another 4 years before people around here start to figure out how to use the internet... lol.  j/k
