More Business For Daytona Beach Is Good News

carOur local newspaper - News-Journal - announced an new car show coming to Daytona Beach. Besides Tampa and Orlando (and 21 other shows all over the world), the show will be held in the Ocean Center from March 31 through April 7.

Good timing, as Bike Week runs the first 10 days of March, and Spring Break, that follows, is realtively slow, so a bit more activity on the beachside would be welcome by everyone.

With disappearance of BCR (Black College Reunion), that is not terribly missed, but which still left hotels and beachside stores struggling to survive, the new attraction is a needed boost for beachside economy.

Ron -  Black College Reunion (BCR) was a 2-3 day event of over 100,000 kids with little if any respect for anything cngreagated on the narrow strip east of Atlantic Ave, creatic a major havoc. I think this was the only time I saw everyone against the event.

The city did not license Black Entertainment Television (BET), and that meant that there were no those very popular concerts, and that was the end of the event.

As for the college part of this event, it always puzzled me that Bethune-Cookman Unitversity, one of 12 original Black Colleges, stayed away from BCR.

I heard that it went to South Florida, but let me tell you that this was a big sigh of relief from many people in the area. It was a very roudy event, quite disruptive to lives of people on the Beachside.

Sounds like a 'spring break' or 'bike week' kind of event.  While those things can be disruptive, they do bring a lot of money to an area.

Ron,

There is a very big difference between Bike Week and Spring Break. Yes it was like Spring Break compressed into 3 day-event from its normal 3 weeks.

Hotel operators are not that happy with Spring Break, but now Spring Break is very small and mostly controlled. BCR was absolutely out of any control and it was an incredible show of disrespect to everyone.

Bike Week is a different story. The problem with Bike Week, as with everything else here is that the city never thought about how to benefit from what they have. How to make the bikers happy. They were taking it as given, and the only thing was how to restrict, how to fine. The city did not make any move that really would have benefited the bikers and the city.

Nearsightedness is the problem. The even is much smaller now and I think it is dying because it takes an effort to do things right, and often here we see the effort do to things wrong.

In a nutshell, if there are no visionaries, you get crap, plain and simple. In Daytona Beach we have things given by God: the Beach, the Ocean, the Climate. Add to that what you can do to make people want to come here and make their stay memorable. So far this part is missing. And having Orlando near where they do not have the Beach, the Ocean, and where they do not have the ocean breezes and it is not as comfortable, but where they have a great vision, and are beating Daytona 100 to 1.

I certainly see your great point there!  Any way to move politicians in the right direction - maybe with pending elections??

Ron,

Daytona market, and Florida Market in general, are slow and depressing. On the other hand there is a lot to think about for everyone. With the crazy way the prices were going up, it came to a point that real estate became unaffordable for locals. It came to the point that teachers and the Police, and Firefighters could not longer buy in the commuinities they were serving. There were even programs to help teachers, etc.

The local government has to figure out where the money will be coming from. The values are dropping and ad valorem tax is less than what it used to be. And everyone wants to curb the taxes. But the oney have to come from somewhere.

People who do not wnat any change are voting always against. What the city failed to explain is that when you vote against groth, or development, you can always be sure that if you win, then you will have to pay for it by taxes. If you do not want any businesses in the area, you will have to be solely responsible to pay for the services, schools, police, fire...

That is something people still do not understand. And it is very simple. If they want to keep it the way it was in 1938, fine, but this would cost a lot of money.
