In a nail biting game against a very talented Texas team, South Lake Charles prevailed tonight (ok, last night if you're paying attention to the time on this blog) and heads to Williamsport for the Little League World Series.

Hopefully, before heading back to Lake Charles, I'll have a chance to insert some of the many photos taken by happy (and crying) friends, parents, and grandparents. My cell phone photo of pitcher Gunner Leger's grandmothers serves as a reminder to ALWAYS carry a digital camera to better capture those well- deserved smiles. Gunner did great.

Kennon Fontentot after victory over Texas East to win the Southwest Regional ChampionshipTo say that South Lake Charles dug in their heels in a never-say-die contest is an understatement!  Thankfully, they did not notice that the ESPN2 crew had left their coverage of the Lake Charles parents section in anticipation of a win by the talented kids from Richmond. With 2 outs and 2 strikes in the 6th inning, it certainly wasn't looking good.

Kennon Fontentot missed the games-almost-over-memo and sent the ESPN guys back to the Lake Charles side of the Waco stadium with a gorgeous home run over center field to tie the game 6-6 and send it into a 7th inning. (Little League plays 6 innings).

A gallant Texas Team fought back to take the lead. The following links detail the entire game which South Lake Charles won 8-7 after:

  • Nicholas Abshire tied the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning with a lead-off home run to center field.
  • Peyton McLemore followed with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, then third on a single to left field by Colton Hunt, then to home plate to score the winning run after a wild pitch.

Derenda, it really was exciting. I'm so impressed with how they stayed mentally tough. It certainly was not their best game, but they kept their heads in the game to see it through. You can bet I'll be glued to ESPN on Saturday. I think it is at 7:00 our time.

Jackque, I mentioned this to my friends who were in route to Williamsport.  They were going to check out the hotel, talk to some other folks, and call me for the number if they decided to pursue.  I'm not sure if they were going to arrive in time for tonight's opening ceremonies.  So, I'm not sure what the status is at this point.

Our Henderson team fell one run short of a trip to the World Series against Waipio HI. Love watching this every summer. The genuine excitement and enthusiasm the players show, along with some really solid baseball fundamentals, is amazing. Good luck to Lake Charles!

Gosh John, 1 run!  That hurts!

Speaking of hurts, it is KILLING me that I could not make the Williamsport trip.  A few years ago a close friend of mine coached the South Lake Charles Little League. They won the regionals and went on to Williamsport . Their enthusiasm remains contagious.

I've had e-mails from my favorite player, Kennon Fontenot's mom. She reports that the boys are having a wonderful time.  What an incredible experience for the kids and the families.  She promised me some photos, including events leading up to the games as well as local sights.

Kennon is pitching or playing shortstopSaturday night.  Here's hoping he does as well in Williamsport as he did at the regionals in Waco.  (Struck out 11 in one game, and I believe he was the leading hitter for the tournament...628 I think) I only know the other kids from watching them in Waco, but they are an impressive group on and off the field.

Thanks for your good wishes. Go, SLC Little Leauge!

I was born and raised in Lake Charles and now living in Lafayette since '77, but that hasn't made me quit cheering for LC teams. What got my attention was that little out fielder Hunter Dupin. My grandfather was Homer Dupin and I suppose Hunter more than likely is a relative. I'd love to know.

Richard, the Lake Charles teams are contagious, no matter you live! I do not know the Dupins, but I'm impressed with Hunter's baseball abilities!
