Earlier this year, I changed the way I drive.  I wrote about this on my other blog, CTRealEstateUnleashed.com.

I don't need to tell you how expensive it is to be in a business that requires you be in the car all the time.  Where I once spent $30/week on gas, I was looking at $60/week. Anyway you look at it, that just stinks.  What's a girl to do?

Without changing my car, inflating my tires (nudge, nudge) or biking to showings like this Realtor in California (helmet hair is not for me), I've managed to save about one gallon of gas per week, or about $4.00.

Over a year, the savings would be around $200-$250.  When you annual gas costs are up in the thousands of dollars, that's not a lot of money but it's better than nothing.

I did it very simply - I've been driving the speed limit, accelerating slower and braking less often.  In addition to improving my gas mileage, I've learned a few things along the way:

I am a better, safer driver.

Almost every other driver on the road is a homicidal maniac (like I once was). I can't tell you how many hand gestures I've had thrown my way lately. Right back at ya'.

I don't lose that much time - maybe 2-3 minutes.  However, sometimes I speed up when my daughter is having a fit in the backseat just to spend 2-3 minutes less with her in the car.

Be prepared to be rear-ended at some point.  It's just a risk you take.

I'm going to save a few hundred dollars in speeding tickets.

I actually get to see where I'm going - the scenery is no longer a blur.

Several of my clients have told me that they appreciate my slower driving style, especially when they are following me to a showing.

I have pretty much tried to do the same thing.   I have also reduced my speed on the interstate, the limit is 55, I drive at 60.  Now I am the slow one.  It is amazing how fast people drive, it is like I am standing still.

It isn't hard to slow down in the DC area.  Especially if you are showing homes during rush hour :-)

Jessica,

You make some very good points. In addition to being a safer driver, you also are establishing a quality part of your brand.

I've been more carefully planning my routes around town so I'm not wasting time or gas. I'm trying to be more thoughtful about how I go about my day.

Great post.  The Atlanta area slows you down naturally!  No magic I promise, when least expected at anytime of the day or night.

I bought my PRIUS in 2002 when gas hit $2.45 and then gas went to $1.65 and everone in my office laughed at me for trading in my TAHOE. Now everyone wants to know all about Hybrids from me...

We are combining our trips out to include errands in whatever part of town we are in at the time. We are spending at least $100 a week in gas.

Jessica,
You are so right!  Slowing down saves money on gas and I think it reduces stress.  However, there is another practical consideration here: please, take advantage of the opportunity to give clients another good reason to use a professional Realtor - they can see all the homes they want and the agent foots the gas bill!  I am a virtual assistant (I work primarily for ReMax agents) and I am amazed that not one client of mine has thought of this themselves...I have always been the one to suggest advertising that point, whether it is on their website, in a newsletter, or in their listing presentation.  A tip for Realtors:  always look at economic news in two ways - how it affects you personally (rising gas prices), and how it affects your target market (saving gas money by contracting with a Realtor).  I don't believe gimmicks really get you more business, but I am always looking to add to lists along the lines of  "The Top Ten Reasons to Hire a Professional Realtor" and "101 Things I do to Earn My Commission," and other such articles for websights and newsletters.

I used to own my own delivery company and over the past few years it was very hard to slow down, it was always save that 3 minutes per delivery, it will give you the time to get one or two more deliveries per day.

Now I have changed that mindset and having kids, I want to drive safer. It was hard, but I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in 5 years now.

In this part of Texas, if we used bikes (without motors) we would die of heat exhaustion before getting to the office.
