Where Is The Short Tail And Where Is The Long Tail In This Photo?

garage sale image 2The following is based on a true story.

Every Saturday morning, I walk with my kids to the donut shop that is almost exactly 1 mile from my home. It's our local donut shop. They know us. We know them. The owners live in our neighborhood.

Saturday, as we were walking along our normal route, we saw a group of kids up ahead trying to attract attention to a garage sale. Some of them had signs. Some of them were just screaming at the passing cars. One was screaming, dancing and holding a sign, all at the same time.

The short tail is always easy to identify.

It hit me as I walked closer, that this scene was a good analogy for someone trying to capture the attention of locals on the Internet. For our analogy, the street with the cars speeding by represents the bulk of the Internet... they may or may not be local and they may or may not be looking for a garage sale. If they are looking for a garage sale, the short tail in this photo, "garage sale" will get their attention. Simple enough.

But what if each of these guys were advertising a different garage sale? That's more like the Internet, isn't it? In this case, each one of them is holding a "garage sale" sign. Each one of them is on the same corner, or the same page of a Google search result, if you will. As the Internet shopper, I have to make a choice. Which one of these guys is going to get me to come to their garage sale? The one with the best position? The biggest sign? The best looking? Let's see.

Best Ranking. Pretty Face. Wants Me To Initiate The Conversation.

Look at the first kid we came to in the photo above, let's say he's the one at the top of the Google rankings. He had a nice smile, a good sign and he made eye contact. Not bad. I waited a beat. Nothing. So, I said hi, then he said hi. That's as far as it went. That's polite, but that's not a conversation. He was depending entirely on his position and his good looks and his friendly smile to get ME to engage with him.

Great Ranking. Not Interested In Engaging At All. No Desire For Conversation.

The next kid in the photo, had a good ranking. He was number 2. But he had no desire to engage at all. He never made eye contact, even when I tried. As a result, I had no desire to initiate a conversation with him. So, I didn't. For me, he represents the vast majority of websites on the Internet. They just stand there. They put out their sign and they hope people pay attention, but they show no desire to engage in any way. I was not impressed.

Good Ranking. Wants To Be Seen And Heard. Conversation Is All About Self.

The next guy had a good position. But he had no sign. He was screaming and dancing. He was shouting at the cars that came by, "This is the best garage sale ever." (I'm not joking) He even tried some innovative catch phrases. Like this one, "This garage sale is totally extreme!" He paid no attention to us at all, his local shopper, even though I had 6 kids with me. We're hard to miss. But he was so focused on putting the attention on himself, that he failed to give US any attention. Some people might be impressed. I wasn't.

Good Ranking. Is Paying Attention To His Local Content And Audience. Initiates A Real Conversation.

All of these guys had a good position. They were on the same corner, our analogy to the same page of the Google rankings. But one of them, not only made eye contact, he asked a question. He said, "Are you looking for some really cheap toys for your kids?" I could only smile.

The entire time walking up and through this I was thinking about the internet and this guy represented the long tail. You can't identify him in the photo. But he was the one paying attention to his neighborhood, to his "niche."  He engaged in a real conversation. And I engaged back. "I've kind of got my hands full right now," I said. "I can see that," he replied. "Wow. You've got a lot of kids." The conversation continued. "Yes, I do," I said. "What kind of toys do you have?" All kinds, board games, some old PlayStation games, Action Figures, all sorts of cool stuff. I've just outgrown them." "Well, I can't stop by right now. But maybe later we'll stop by. Thanks for asking. I really appreciate it." He showed he was paying attention, understood my needs, respected my time and was willing to engage at a personal level.

Now, imagine these are real estate websites. Which one are you?

Wow, Jeff.  First instinct -- you have Blogger Brain.  Second instinct, you have something good to teach me.  I want to be that last guy.  Thanks for sharing this!

And your Apprentice left me a very nice comment on a blog I did a couple days ago.  I wanted to thank you for it, too.  She said you sent her my way.  So, thanks!

Again another great analogy to help us understand where we stand in the big scheme of SEO or YEO things..  (if you missed Jeff's post on YEO here it is.)

This is something I've been trying to improve for myself and my company over the last few months, the end result and goal is easy to identify.   Conistently putting my plan into action is the hard part.

Ok I gotta go, my long tail is wagging my dog.

Jeff,

This post really hits the nail on the head.  It is one thing to get someone's attention, but it is what you do afterward that really affects the situation.  Being on the personal level of your potential client is key.  Asking them questions about their family, occupation and dreams is the next step to building rapport.  It is all about them.

Jeff;

Great post and a wonderful analogy, as many have said here. I am just trying to picture in my mind how to get my web site at www.indianriverhomesales.com to initiate that level of communication with some one passing by. The thought of a splash screen with a video welcoming the vistor comes to mind, but then many might consider that just a flash in the pan. Personally, I have never cared for splash screens so that is probably not the best idea.

ANyway, you got me thinking and that is probably a good thing. Thanks!!!

Awesome!  I have found that you can have the best website, the best direct marketing piece, the best drip mail campaign, the best SEO and the best systems but if you cannot engage in a conversation (for conversion's sake) you will fail.  I know a bit off topic but still applies :)

Jeff, great post. I've noticed a similar point in Church Car washes taht I used to be a part of. We all used the same street corner. Those that just stood there, whether cute or not, only attracted teh attention of those who really wanted a car wash. Those who were animated did a  little better. But those who were animated and enganged individual drivers did the best.

Jeff...

I love communicating a point thru and analagy.

As for websites... on of the reason I PUSH so hard for stagers to have GOOD pictures is because the cause people to STOP and look and begin to engage.

Photos to a stager are like RATES to a mortgage broker.

Jeff, great analogy - were your ears burning this morning - I was raving about you to my husband who spends less time in the rain than I do and I was telling him that "You not only created a great product - (which he also loves) but that you were always on the look out for other great tools and not just to "know the latest gadget" but to actually try it out and share ideas on how we could use it in our business (ex. Jott.com, PollDaddy, Wuffoo,Twittr and too many more to list here)"

I spent a couple of hours just reading old posts of yours to get all the goodies that you shared before I arrived to AR.  It's amazing what a wealth of info you are - you are definitely the last guy - tuned in and focused on WIFM for all of us like so many already said. Thank you

I am pretty sure that this was the BEST laymans terms of internet marketing that I have ever heard - and it was based on a real life experience. It made SO MUCH SENSE, too. Thank you.

My idea of long tail marketing is to have a garage sale, in my garage, with the door closed - no outside marketing. Heck! I may even take a nap. But then I will gripe and complain that my sale was not a success. There are always THOSE folks ... "My website doesnt bring me customers. So, I am going to get rid of it."

Oh, ok.

Jeff I love your analogy; and I have to add (as a former HS teacher), how intersting it always was to see the teenagers who avoided eye contact and would not engage and try to loosen them up so they would. Not an always easy task in that age group! I am on a continual journey to make myself a number three garage sale man (er, woman lol).  So far the one thing on every post, before I hit 'publish' is to see how many times I've used the word 'I' and to see how conversational instead of 'strident' I am.  Good job JT!

I've been away from the computer for most of the day. It's "siblings day" in the Turner house. The kids exchange handmade gifts with one another. So, we've been celebrating. Then, while the girls were napping, I took the boys on a very long hike. I came home to find a slew of comments. Fantastic analogy, Jeff. Lately my daughter has been getting leads from RE/MAX and 7 of them said they picked her because she was young and looked like fun. Good for her, I'm happy ! I'm also saving for a face lift or botox. :)  Seriously, I guess we all get picked for alot of reasons. I listed a condo Sat. they picked me because they searched Ypsilanti condo realtors. I've never used that search term in my life.

Oh well, what ever works. Guess I would pick the one that engaged me from your blog.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for the very thoughtful post.

Imagine if you will, that I was the Donut shop proprietor and I informed you of a garage sale that I was undertaking.  Would you re-consider who among the Five (4 you described + the Donut proprietor) you would most likely engage with?

The Donut shop proprietor personifies the elements of trust, familiarity and established relationships.  I would argue that incorporating those elements into your on-line presence can also be of great benefit.

Of course, I find myself thinking of ways in which to accomplish that.

Blog homework for the week?

Hi Jeff, I am late to the party, as usual, but thanks for the post - it really made me think.  For that garage sale, I guess I would have been standing there with different colored balloons, would have given them to people passing by, till I ran out, then I would have probably gone to other garage sales in the area and forgotten all about mine.
