One of the wonderful things about the community of Millburn/Short Hills is that it provides an abundance of exciting opportunities for teenagers and young people. As a parent, I am happy to live in a place that offers so many wonderful prospects for my children. Three seniors at Millburn High School, Hannah Zucker, Jenna Farber and Ashley Ressler are exploring the worlds of design and fashion this summer in New York City as part of the school’s Career Exploration Internship Program.

Hannah Zucker is thrilled to be interning at Design Works International in midtown. Design Works creates original patterns and prints then sells them to various companies which use them for a wide array of items such as clothing, paper goods and interior design. As an intern at Design Works, Zucker goes through the company’s inventory of "trend and design boards", to ascertain whether or not the patterns she finds are marketable or out of style. Should Hannah deem a pattern to be marketable, it is properly labeled and stored. Zucker’s job is an important and difficult one.

Jenna Farber’s job in the fashion industry is somewhat different from what Hannah Zucker does. Primarily, she works for Robbie Bee, which is a fashion company known for their wonderful women’s dresses. Robbie Bee is widely considered to be an upscale brand, commonly found in department stores such as Macy’s. Right now, Robbie Bee is working on a “fabric library”. They are organizing all of their fabrics according to variables such as design and seasons. Farber’s job involves organizing these fabrics and building the foundation for this “fabric library”.

Ashley Ressler’s experience is different still from her comrades. Ressler’s internship and interest relate to the retail aspect of the fashion business. Her internship at the Marc Jacobs store has helped her to appreciate the global operation that is Marc Jacobs. Ressler assists customers and makes recommendations. She also sorts and organizes fashions, and helps with the overall presentation and image of the store.

These girls are able to pursue their dream careers thanks to the Career Exploration Internship Program provided by their high school. The internships these girls have now will undoubtedly give them an advantage in their future careers. New homeowners choose to reside in Millburn/Short Hills in part because the town offers children and adolescents opportunities such as this.
