What is the most important thing you need to know about the basics of shooting video? Is it content, style, length, quality, or just a free-for-all?  Tara Jones is on a roll as she shares the basics of shooting video.  This Video Post is a ReBlog of her article and Video on ActiveRain.

As a video enthusiast myself, I follow Tara's Blog closely and recommend you do the same. Video is the hottest thing in Real Estate right now. It's viral, it's growing, and it's more powerful than just text or audio.  It is the "New Wave" of Internet marketing and Social Media Networking.

THIS IS A REBLOG TEST:

Via Tara Jones (Reel Productions TV):

So now that you know how to turn the camera on how do you know what to shoot?  It's not as easy as you may think.  We're going to walk you through a typical home tour with some photographer 101 basics.

First of all, try and find the focal point in the room.  Is it the stack stone fireplace?  The decorative hood over the range?  The unique spiral staircase?  Whatever the feature, try and showcase it first to grab the viewers' attention.  The key to remember when creating a video home tour is giving them a "tease".  You don't want to show them every light switch and electrical outlet...you want them to come see the house in person so you can sell it to them!  With that in mind, keep it simple.  Just a one to three shots in the main rooms (we'll get to what the main rooms are later) will do the trick.

Second, NEVER shoot into windows.  Why?  No matter how powerful the light is in the room it can never overpower the sun.  That means whatever is inside will turn black (or extremely dark) and all you see are the windows.  Therefore, never set up an interview by a window (since you won't see the person's face) and try to avoid pans into the windows since you will completely throw the color off in the room.

Third, keep your shots steady.  Viewers can get sick watching a shaky video.  Have you ever seen Blair Witch project?  That photojournalistic technique is not recommended when selling real estate.  If you have a tripod, use it.  Try and find a flat surface where you can place your camera for pans or zooms (see below) so your shots will look more polished and professional.  Always try to begin with an establishing shot...a shot that shows the entire room before beginning a pan or zoom technique.

So what are pans and zooms?  Clearly stated, a pan is moving the camera from side to side and a zoom is closing the camera lens in on a particular object.  To accomplish a pan correctly make sure your camera is steady.  If you're panning a room try and keep the "horizon line" (think about being on a boat) straight.  This means you want the floor to remain in the same spot throughout the shot.  Keep the same idea in mind when panning up and down, say, on a staircase.  The sides of the shot should remain consistent to keep a professional look and feel.

For zooms, don't use it unless it's necessary.  Just because you have a feature on your camera doesn't mean you should use it!  Ask yourself these questions:  What am I zooming in on?  Why am I zooming in on this object?  Will it add any additional information to the viewer?  I once watched a video home tour where the photographer zoomed in on a plant.  Why?  Does the plant come with the house?  Do I need to know something additional about this plant that I didn't get from the first shot?  Think about detail whenever using the zoom such as a decorative back splash or exquisite crown molding.  Anything that can not be picked up on the initial shot or pan of the room MAY require a zoom.

Next video lesson:  Downloading your video onto the computer (Gulp!)

Brad- these are some great videos...they have some really good tips...the one with windows is so important!  I would add to it, turn on all the lights inside the home too!  they add a major level of warmth to a home.

Great re-blog Brad!  I was actually going to try a re-blog this morning then lost the courage--I want to wait to see what happens with this!  I HAVE to purchase a video camera and have heard that the Flip is a favorite but, wanted to wait a bit until something VERY easy to use comes out!  I know I need to go ahead and get the thing and get to work with video.  I understand that the voice is translated into text for the search engines?  Isn't that supposed to improve your Google juice?!

As always, thanks for the tips!

Brad... Looks like a great series with informative information.  Summer is passing by quickly and I haven't spent anytime highlighting interesting outdoor activities in my area.

3:36pm • #4

Jeremy - thanks buddy. This is just a reblog test and Tara Jonesis a great ezample of someone I don't mind reblogging and hopefully helping her and her Blog out.  She has some great ideas, experience and information to share.  I thought this would only go on my outside Blog, I didn't know it would show up here on AR.  I had to jump in and test it at some point after the ruccus I caused! lol~  Glad you liked her video tips.

7:03pm • #5

Debe - after all the Whoopla I started yesterday, I was a bit gun shy myself, but you know me. ActiveBrad, always getting into something or causing issues somewhere! haha!  I wanted to see what thois would do to help the original author Tara.  She's a friend I met at Inman Connnect in SF a couple weeks ago. Wanted to see if the Reblog would be beneficial to her by me posting it.  I have chosed 2 of her posts to reblog and test. No more for me until I get all the facts and see the benefits of how this stuff is going to work.

I would suggest the Flip video definately and yes, voice to text recognition is already here, when google uses that technology in video, they will be indexed just like your posts. The words that come out of one's mouth on Video will be searchable. It's True!  Good stuff and probably why Video is so huge right now.  Ealy birds get the worms, late birds get the pieces and leftovers.  :-)

Jeremy - don't thank me, thank the AR guys for making it available, and for allowing me to try and break it, or screw it up if I can, or prove it works or don't work! lol~  It's a very cool tool, but I have a few reservations and concerns still, nothing that we won't address and resolve though.

Thanks for popping in my friend to visit.

I hope you'll go over to Tara's Blog and leave a comment about seeing her Post reblogged over here.  I think that's how it's suppose to work. Driving the original author traffic and exposure is suppose to be one of the HUGE benefits of reblogging. So did you go see her Blog yet?  LMK...    :-)

7:13pm • #7

Dan - thanks, but I can't take the credit for this series, it's a REBLOG from TARA JONES Blog here on AR.  Could you tell that? Did you know?  I'm testing the new reblog tool on AR to see how it all pans out.

It looks like based on your comment Dan that you had no idea this wasn't my content.  Not sure that's a good thing.  I appreciate your comment, don't get me wrong, but Tara should be getting ALL the kudos here, I just found her series and wanted to test and share at the same time.

I Still have questions and concerns about all this but at least I'm jumping in with both feet.  Dan, Let me know your thoughts if you ever make it back to this post. Thanks my friend.  :-)

I'll be back to read Episode 1 and 2. Geez, now I've got to learn video and I'm just getting into blogging. Can somebody go sell real estate for me?

7:42pm • #9

This was a test post to see how AR's Reblog will work.

A few points and notes/questions for the crew:

I should not be able to go in and edit this post, which I can. A reblog should only allow the reblog author to modify their own (optional commentary) not the original authors content.

I think the option to reblog a reblogged Blog should be turned off.

I thought the reblog was only going to be for outside blogs, I don't have the option to select one or the other or both. I only wanted this on my outside blog and not my AR Blog. Not sure about that one.

I think the original author should have a better link title and get rid of the VIA. It should say "Author" or maybe "Original Author" and be hard coated to that post. Maybe add a small image or photo of the author as well.

SEO observation:

Just some thoughts I needed to put down somewhere so I wouldn't forget to share them with the AR team and members later. :-)

Thanks for sharing our series here on AR. We are in the process of really building this series out and adding subjects that everyone can use as video grows on the web.

Jeremy's comment on lighting is valuable. Using lights in a room is a key to creating quality video. In the future we are going to invite a close friend of mine to share tips for lighting in one of our segments. But, let me just say you need to be cautious in using lights due to different color of each type. It's refered to as mixed source lighting. To make the video look it's best it has to be all one color of light. Watch for a future segment as I mentioned that will cover this important are.

Thom and Ray - If real estate were selling like it was back in the day when I started in this business, I come sell all you want and you could video my stuff! lol~  Video is something we all need to jump on and now is the time. Thanks for commenting on My Reblog. Be sure to stop by Tara's blog and thank her for this great info.

7:48pm • #12

TJ - thanks for stopping by to comment, I really appreciate that.  I have talked with many a videologist and agree that lighting is a very important aspect of both video and photography.  Natural lighting is the way to go is my understanding.

I'm Looking forward to more of your posts here on AR.  BTW - if you haven't joined yet, you should, and if you have, be sure to login before commenting, it gives readers a linkback to your Blog via your name signature.  You'll notice this on the others who commented.

Thanks again. You and Tara are doing an awesome job and providing some great content.  :-)

Thom & Ray - Tara and TJ are local for us.  They did a video for me and are GREAT.  And they are part of the Diamond Dwellings team... you know that lunch we need to have?

And I find it funny that I snagged the first position in Google...

I already mentioned that I think the original author shoud get a pic and bio on the re-blog.

Finally, I wasn't able to edit the original when I did it, but I haven't tried to go in and edit after I posted, either.  Also, I wasn't given the option of posting to groups or anything else.  It just went straight to the outside blog.  I actually wanted to get it into some groups.  ... Thaks for doing that Brad.

This is a snippet from an email I just received from WellcomeMat.  I thought it was very interesting and confirms we may all be on the right path.

"While soaking up this week’s local video wrap up, we’d like to ask that everyone forget that local video is being projected as a $1.5 Billion market by 2012, and instead focus on what local video is: a celebration of community. We’d like to think that everyone remembers hopping into the car with our grandmother or grandfather and what it meant to “hit the town.” We’d like to think that everyone remembers those stores, shops, merchants, the smells, the elderly lady at the counter that handed you a lolly pop without fail, or the guy that was halfway done making your sandwich by the time the front door of the deli shut behind you.

While you are reviewing the week in local video, we’d like to ask that you 100% soak in this little nugget of truth: local video is the most powerful tool that the little guy/girl has ever seen. It is a celebration of our communities, a celebration of why you chose to live/stay in your home towns, a celebration of the people, a celebration of uniqueness, and a rock solid competitive advantage." WellcomeMat

Here's a response to my own observations made above, Things do happen quick around here:

I should not be able to go in and edit this post, which I can. A reblog should only allow the reblog author to modify their own (optional commentary) not the original authors content.

You will be unable to make any edits to the original authors post!  I checked it with Jon tonight. We tried and it failed, so scratch that one off the list.

I think the option to reblog a reblogged Blog should be turned off.

You can not reblog a reblogged post, the icon will not be there. Yeah!!

I thought the reblog was only going to be for outside blogs, I don't have the option to select one or the other or both.

Jon decided to have them post on AR too.  I can see by this post how affective it can be, just ask Tara. :-)
It does create a challenge though if I want my outside blog to be different than my AR Blog.

I think the original author should have a better link and get rid of the VIA. It should say "Author" or maybe "Original Author" and be hard coated to that post. Maybe add a small image or photo of the author as well.

The jury is still out on this one. I like the idea of a small photo or at least something more than "Via" If you reblogged my post, I think "Author" would be better or "Source" just as we always have done when using snippets or quotes from others on our posts.  I'm ok with Via, it's just my personal preference and opinion.  (Sorry Jon, sticken to my guns on that one) at least source is a good compromise right? :-)

Regarding the google SEO and screen shot, I think that Lane had the most recent post, so he ended up on top, but let's wait a couple days and see what happens. At least I'm convinced that there is Google juice in reblogging now.

How many people viewed this reblog, and of those, how many clicked on the Tara Jones and ReelDwellings.tv links?

2:28am • #27

John - Only 260 views so far, you'd have to find out from Tara how many clicks or views she's had since this post and I don't believe there is a way to determine exactly who they are from here unless she has the proper analytics setup, but I can tell you this, she probably doesn't care because she's getting twice the hits by me posting reblogging this.

If you have a post you'd like me to reblog to test the theory, I'd love to try that with you.  Just send me the best content you got. New, fresh, different and I'll reblog it and then you can tell us if your visits and traffic increase.  You can also just wait and see the results of what happens with Tara and her post and traffic.

Looking at her increase of comments on the two I reblogged for testing, looks like she's had more comments on them both than any other post she's written on ActiveRain, I'd think thats a pretty good sign, don't you?  :-)

2:47am • #28

Lisa - that's a great tip, just make sure you walk slowly and like you have a full glass of wine on your head, otherwise the video can get pretty bumby!!  I know exactly what your friend means...I do zoom more often walking now than when I use to with the zoom feature, but I still have room for plenty of improvement..  :-)) Thanks for sharing that, it really is a valuable tip for video shooting.

2:51am • #29

Yeah, so I am working on finishing up a post with a video of the amenities in my neighborhood... I have come to the conclusion, my video skills are still lacking!

9:45am • #31

Hey Jeremy

We are here to help. That is why we are doing these video tutorials, to aid you guys in achieving your goals with listings. If you need any further assitance with shooting or editing let us know.

9:51am • #32

Jeremy - practice will make you better, it's inevitable.  Remember your first Blog post, or that first listing presentation? See, you can only get better. Video is no different. You learn by doing.

I would also take up TJ on his offer.  Let him do a before and after with you (Complimentary of Course) and that would help both of you. Do a before TJ video and an After TJ video and I'd be happy to look into featuring something like that here on AR.  What say Ye?  :-))

9:55am • #33

TJ - nice of you to offer my friend some help.  Hope you'll check out the comment I left him. Are you game?  I know you have to make a living at this but my idea of doing a before and after (TJ's Help) video could benefit everyone all the way around.

Just a thought, thanks for reaching out and offering your assistance. Let me know what you think.  :-))

9:58am • #34

Brad - Most definately. We would be open to that. It would be a great way to demonstrate a lot of the concepts we are attempting to share on the tutorials.

FYI we will begin to build an archive on our site reeldwellings.tv after we get the first 4 episodes delivered.

10:12am • #35

Hey TJ, Thanks for helping me man!  How do we get started?

10:23am • #36

Brad- I say not Ye, but how about yes!  That would be an awesome thing!

10:31am • #37

We probably need to have you edit one of your tours then send me footage. We could do a critique of what you have done then rebuild it with our suggestions. Tara and I can feature it in episode 6. We already have 1 - 5 mapped out and are in the process of finishing them for posting.

Don't worry we will be gentle. We have found that usually two or three suggestions can make a big difference in the quality of what you do.

10:35am • #38

@Jeremy & @TJ - I'm looking forward to helping make this happen anyway I can. Let me know what you need, and just keep me in the loop.  The sooner we can get this put together, the better.  Let's get episode#6 on the map asap.

Thanks TJ and Tara for doing this, know that your efforts are already making a difference in the community.  :-)

I just wrote a post about my night at the pool with my daughter...in that, I put up a video of the amenities in my neighborhood...didn't have a lot of video footage, but mixed in some stills as well.

10:41am • #40

Here's the post... A night at the pool don't worry about being gentle, you can be brutal...I know it isn't that great, I need to go back with a tripod and remake the video footage...it kinda came spur of the moment while I was swimming LOL!

10:44am • #41

Brad-Thanks for thinking of such a great idea!

10:44am • #42

Or, if that doesn't work, lemme know, I have a bunch of video footage I just shot for one of Myrtle Beach's big tourist destinations

10:45am • #43

Jeremy - Glad you are connecting with TJ.  It looks like you are off to a great start, not sure if you'll need the  photos but this will be a great "before" video to share.  I'm looking forward to the "After" video with great anticipation. I suggest driving to their office and meeting with them, they are awesome peeps!!

Now stop commenting here, get back to work on that video, you're hijacking my REBLOG TEST post.
haha! (big smile)

Advice not to use zoom just cause you have it...a case when you do.  On a lake shooting out over the water thru the living room window of the waterfront property and on a pair of loons with a baby...and then pull back slowly to show more and more of the lake, the fall foilage across the water during a sunset and then the front deck comes into view and viewer realizes you are in the living room...and you narrate..this is the view that greets you each morning you wake up and wander out into the living room and go wow...am I lucky to be on a lake!

3:40pm • #64

All valid points, though we were discussing the Flip camera. I don't think you should even attempt such a zoom with this product. The trade off is good video versus effect. Good video always wins.

I dig back on your blog so I won't dominate your comment streams with my nonsense. It's something Caleb once suggested I do. It's also a great way to see what you have buried back in AR heaven :)

I don't mind the emails. I wake up to 100's of emails everyday, most of them from AR. Once I check off a box, to be notified of comments, I very rarely uncheck it. It's my way of keeping my pulse on this Community. Many of The Members know I do that. And just as many mouth off at me because they know they still have my attention via my email :)

TLW is serenading EVERYONE with her embeds, isn't she?!  BTW--this is my absolute favorite tune of all times!

As for keeping your finger on the pulse of AR--this is one that I struggle with because of the number of emails that come in--especially if the posts have been featured in the newsletters.  Talk about enundated with emails!  I want to keep up with them all but, just can't.  I applaud TLW for her devotion and having the ability to do this!

Take care and have a wonderful weekend...

Blog-N-Roll...

Isn't there some kind of Guideline that prohibits Debe from stalking me around the Rain? :)

Okay Debe...

AHH!  We love you too, Brad!  Hey, this is a great way to see how many folks still have this one bookmarked!  ;-)

TLW had a BIG day today so, I'm sure she's checked out for the weekend!  Her son is moving back and she is like a kid in a candy store right now.  I can't wait for the post telling us all about it!

Enjoy your weekend...

I was wondering why a year old blog was getting so much attention! This is a great test.  BTW:  Thanks for the awesome song...that's enough to keep people coming back time and time again :-)

Debe - I noticed TLW has been quiet here this weekend, but I know she'll get this email and be back to comment when things settle down at her home front.  I'm very excited she is getting to see her son.  Semper Fi baby!!  :-)

Tara - great to hear from you, yep, these two ladies have a way of diggin up my old stuff (actually your old stuff) and having fun with it.  Bless their hearts, they brought this post back to life.  :-))

LOL...

You all know me so well. Although things haven't settled down I have my mornings before I'm invaded by Grand kids whose sole priority seems to be to keep me away from my computer. I'm having a blast Guys. The one thing I'd forgotten about here is that there's four children and only one Grammy. I'm spreading myself a bit thin but loving every minute of it. Semper Fi Baby. Semper Fi :)
