Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside - A Bit of California History (LOCALISM FEATURED)

The establishment of the 21 California missions over a period of about 54 years, beginning in 1769, played an important role in the history, growth, and development of California.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside A number of existing towns grew up around these religious communities that brought livestock, grains, flowers, fruits and industry to California in addition to Christianity.

The missions were all established along El Camino Real, the "King's Highway", which exist today; from as far north as Sonoma (north of San Francisco) and south almost to the Mexican border in San Diego.

The Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is the 18^th of the 21 missions, established in 1798 and named for Louis IX, King of France. This particular mission was the largest of all the California missions and at one point had a Native American population of 2700. This mission is roughly halfway between the mission established in San Diego and the one further north in San Juan Capistrano.

The mission is open to visitors, with a museum, gift shop, cemetery and grounds to tour. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is located on Mission Boulevard east of El Camino Real and Douglas Drive, about 15 minutes inland from the coast in Oceanside. The surrounding community is now deemed a historic area.

Very cool featured post Mr. Jeff. I had no idea about any of the MIssions' influence and history this was fabulous. I'm going to follow more links very cool.

And I had no idea the Jesuits were originally Spanish but it makes sense.

Great information - it reminds me of days LONG ago when I had to do a report on California Missions - it was so long ago I don't remember what grade I was in. The missions are beautiful and certainly do hold a lot of history.

Jeff I love the way you did your slide show. Some of these building were beautiful.

It's so amazing to think how old these structures are. I doubt many of the homes that are being built now will be around in 200 years. I visited the mission south of Tucson when I briefly lived there. It was fascinating inside. The one in your photo is very pretty.

Hi Congratulations on the Localism Featured. I love these old missions and our brains are on similar paths. Looks like I'll wait a while for the San Diego Missions,:-) . I was doing it on two missions, Mission Presideo and Mission San Diego de Alcala. These places are really interesting.

Nice job on one of our CA Missions. They're a real treasure here. I've seem many, yet not all. BTW, we all studied them in grade school and I can still remember helping my kids when they were young make their project/model out of popcicle sticks and clay. Everyone has to make one.

Jeff, tried to use that slide show, but could not figure out how to get the code to put it into posts. You'll be our favorite guy in the world for a few days if you tell me. Am sure it's because I don't understand something I should.

Hi Jeff -

Nice photos of the mission. Both of my (now 26 and 28 years old) daughters had to do their "mission projects" in 4th grade. Their choice was to either build one out of sugar cubes, clay & other messy things, or to go visit one and write a report. I choose to take them on the field trip and we chose Mission San Luis Rey. I still have their reports, including photos of them posing in the "lavendaria" or walking around the cemetary there.

Jeff - excellent post about the history of the missions. I have two daughters who both had to do mission projects. One was about 7 years ago, and one was 2 years ago. They both had to know the history of the mission and write a report, a well as build a model. They don't really build them out of sugar cubes (I think I did that a long time ago) anymore, and some of the models were impressive. I still have my youngest' project.

ALL - Thanks for all the nice comments and compliments. The history of the missions is fascinating and it has been fun to learn more about them and see one of them live. I enjoyed hearing the stories from those of you who had children who had to create models and write stories. Now if you had some pics to share THAT would be really cool. Jeff, I remember years ago that the kids in 5th or 6th grade all study the CA missions. These type of articles will certainly help parents know where they are and plan their weekend trips to view CA history.

You just have the coolest localism posts! Maybe I should call you up to be a tour guide next time I am out there!

Thank you for sharing your info on the Mission nearby. I know that when I visited San Juan Capistrano Mission it was always fun to see the architecture and the beauty of that mission. Like all of the Missions in CA it is very interesting how they came about and what a rich part that is still preserved in history. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing about the Mission San Luis Rey! I love the California missions history and I can't imagine our drive up the coast without them. This is one mission I have yet to see, so I hope to get down there on a weekend, it looks beautiful!

Being from South Orange County, the missions are always on the agenda for our visitors and holidays. My most memorable time was seeing the play about Juniperra Sierra back in the hillside of San Clemente, honoring the mission in San Juan Capistrano. The story telling sparked an interest in all the missions in California for me. Thanks for the beautiful presentation of one I have not been to yet. Can't wait! I will go visit it when I am back down there.

My family has been on many a detour in my quest to visit them all, we just need to get to the ones south of Santa Barbara. And with four kids we constructed quite a few(lasagna noodles and furniture stain make great rood tiles) throughout the years. The best part, it's hard to choose a favorite because each has a unique feature or quality
