A lot of us may not agree with the war, others are very enthusiastic (I have not met the first).  But the truth is that whether or not we agree, it doesn't change the fact that our military, our friends, our neighbors...... are risking their lives for our country.  We need to show our support in every way we can and I wanted to share with you what some dear friends have done.

This year we thought we were receiving the customary "girl scout cookie plea" from some Miami Shores real estate clients and friends, but it was very different.  This was the e-mail:

Hello everybody,

It is that time again GIRL SCOUT cookies. JM is selling Girl Scout cookies this year.  I know everybody has a couple of boxes still frozen in their freezer from last year. A fellow mother told me that she is sending cookies to the soldiers in Iraq. What a great idea!

She gave me a name of a solider who is on walking patrol in Baghdad.  He is the son in law of the Andersons.  If anyone would like to buy their boxes for Maj Buzzard and company fwd me an email.  I will order the cookies and mail them out. So the hard part is taken care of.

Thanks for your consideration.  Hope all is well with everybody.

Needless to say, I could not pass this opportunity and sent her money right away.  I have been thinking of ways to show my appreciation but GIRL SCOUT COOKIES was perfect.  A little piece of "home" for our soldiers!

Here are some photos of the kids with the cookies before they were shipped out (the cookies, not the kids : ) )

We want to thank our Miami Shores Real Estate friends for their creativity and for including us in their generous plan to put a smile on our loved ones overseas.  Hopefully our military will not be there next year, but if they are, count on us again.

Our neighborhood girl scouts did the same thing. One of the girls' godfather was over there and she deicided to send him some. The idea grew and they ended up sending multiple boxes to his whole unit. It was nice to be able to do something for our troops.

Ines - fabulous idea, and you know thoae soldiers will just love that little piece of home when they get their cookies!  Kudos to the troops who took this one - great support for those fighting and supporting all of us back here at home.

Cute pics!

Eric - I'm sure you will look at girl scout cookies differently from now on.

Melissa - That's pretty awesome!  I love those little girl scouts!

Ann - being overseas must be so hard, can you imagine the troops' faces when they receive the decorated boxes and all those cookies?

Very cool, a great idea. My supply of GS cookies does not last long enough to be frozen!

Ines ~ what a great idea to ship out the cookies (not the kids).  I know soldiers happen to love cookies and anything from home.  Nice work...

Jay- THAT's exactly what I thought when I read the e-mail - left over cookies?  WHERE?

Kristal - LOL!  I thought no-one paid attention to my silly comments.

Bob - Who said our troops were on The Atkins Diet?  : )

Kelli - I will certainly post it to the Share because You care group - thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Karen - I'm with you - hopefully they will be home way before then.

Ines, this is a great idea.  One of the Underwriters daughter at McCue Mortgage is a Girl Scout, so I am going to suggest this to her, but of course I am still going to have to buy a couple of boxes for myself.

I am with Jay they don't last long enough around my house to be frozen either.

George - you can never go without at least a couple of boxes for yourself.   Rick has his stash of Thin Mints in the freezer and picks at them all the time.

this is a great idea....

I think that the girl scout cookie sales are great - it gets people involved and I love thin mints (but they changed this year and I'm mad)...

anyway... I think that it is a great opportunity for all the enterprising mothers out there to teach valuable sales skills to their daughters as well...

if the girls that knocked on my door had said, "Buy 3 boxes and we'll ship one off", she'd have gotten 50% more sales out of me!

David - in the "diet society" that we are in - it's nice to buy and cooperate without actually having to eat the cookies.  Rick has been eating his thin mints and has not mentioned that they changed.

that's part of the thin mint change.... they used to be 25 calories per cookie - on weight watchers it was 2 for 1 point... now they are 40 calories and slightly thicker

girl scout cookies used to be made at Bremner Biscuits in Louisville, KY - my hometown... I remember thin mints were always my favorite and my brother liked peanut butter so much that sometimes he would trick my mom into buying 2-3 boxes with peanut butter and I'd have to share thin mints with my parents ... funny thing is now he's 'allergic' to peanuts

David - now you're getting too technical for me - I just eat them and enjoy them - why count calories?

Ines, what a lovely story!  I think this is a great idea for all involved, the Brownies, the soldier, and the folks at home wanting to do something meaningful.  Thanks for sharing this.  If they get any letters back from the soldiers, it would be a great update to your story!
