The Museum in the CommunityThe Museum in the Community started in 1983 with the combined efforts of the Huntington Museum of Art and area high school kids.

This museum got it's start in a strip mall as an art class learned how to run a museum.  Apparently, they took their role VERY seriously.  Today we have a very stylish building for the museum located at Valley Park in Hurricane.

I remember those early days, with the surprisingly professional art by the students gracing the walls.  You'll still find art from local students at this museum, as well an interesting round of exhibits.  There are the expected exhibits of sculpture and paintings, and occasionally something a little different like a collection of snow globes on loan from residents of Putnam County.  I appreciate a museum that has a little fun, and I feel it helps bond the community to the museum when we have a chance to participate like this.

There was a Monte Carlo Night this month to raise funds for the museum, and it was wildly successful.  More than 100 people attended and played casino games with "funny money".

The next exhibit features photography from the Charleston Camera Club.

There are currently watercolor classes available to all experience levels.  Come give it a try!

The Museum is staffed entirely by volunteers.  To volunteer yourself or find out more information on the museum, call (304) 562-0484.  The Museum in the Community is located at #3 Valley Park Drive in Hurricane.

Hi, Bob!  It's a great place, I only wish they'd had more exhibits up while we were there.  I'll have to go back and get more pics when there's something cool going on.  Won't have to wait long, I bet!

Hi, Cyndee!  I think I got this from Jeff Turner on the post "Localism in Motion".  He did LOADS of them and all you have to do is save them to your own computer!  Go on and take this one if you like and then go see all the pretty colors he made up there.
