Lake Idamere Park -- A Hidden Gem

Located at 12335 County Road 448 just on the shores of Lake Idamere sits a boundless playground and dog park. The 43-acre lakeside park was officially opened in December 2006.Entrance to Lake Idamere Park

I only discovered this park during the summer of 2007 when a friend set up a play date for our children. I have to say I was impressed the first time I went and we have been back often. Last year when we first went there was an issue that the only restroom facilities were port-a-potties. I am happy to report I discovered restroom facilities had been added when we visited recently.

Lake Idamere ParkThe park equipment is on a rubber foundation and the equipment is constructed to allow children of all abilities to play.  The playground sits under a canopy of trees so the slides are kept cool. There are also several misting stations where the kids can cool off.

In addition to playground equipment there are picnic pavilions, biking and walking trails, a pier, and a dog park.Lake Idamere Park

The dog park is 50,000 square feet divided into three areas; one for large dogs, one for smaller dogs and one for an obstacle course. The ground is sand. The dog park is fenced with benches, water stations, disposable bags, night lighting, and trash cans. The restroom facilities are across the parking lot at the playground area.

Lake Idamere ParkThe Children's Foundation of Lake County, a major contributor to the park, continues to collect donations to add additional features to the park.

JoEllen... This place sounds like a treat for children.  The *dog* park sounds outstanding.  They need to have some of these in Connecticut.  There are non that I am aware of.  It would be great to take my dog to a place were he can run and not be on a leash.

JoEllen,

Isn't that just a beautiful park! I've heard only good things but have yet to visit it. Doesn't it have a canoe/kayak launch area for the lake too?

Valerie -- We seemed to have no dog parks for the longest time. Now there is at least one in every town. Unfortunately, my shepherd went blind a couple months ago and dog parks are now no-no's.

Gerry -- You have to go. There is an area to launch canoes and kayaks. The last time we were there we got to watch two guys practice for a water ski slalom. (They launched from one of the homes across the lake.)

JoEllen,

Yes I financed quite a few of those homes as Shamrock Homes finished out that community. Indeed one of them is currently on the market and priced well. Feel free to call me for more info on it or let's do that lunch at Tony's finally! btw- that community, Lakeside at Tavares, does have a community boat ramp to Lake Idamere, though I don't know if water depth is adequate right now.

JoEllen:  This sounds like a fun place to hang out.  Also sounds like a great place to hold a charity event benefiting an animal charity....like an obstacle course run.
