While at yesterdays inspection I opened the electrical panel in the house. I noticed that one of the neutral wires had melted insulation. According to most SOP I’d report the observation and course of action and I am done.
Since I corporately or personally have no SOP I decided to touch the wire to feel if it was hot and would pose a present danger. Not smart, since my laser thermometer was a mere 20 feet away. That wired which was connected to the neutral buss bar started sparkling and started glowing. I grabbed the neutral wire and pulled it out of the buss. I checked the neutral for voltage and it had 120 volts.
Somebody screwed up and could have killed someone or burned down the house.
Have a great day inspecting.
