I seem to remember that the Search Engines do count the age of your domain name in ranking your site.

It seems to me that someone also said that the length of time that you have it reserved for into the future counts for something as well (demonstrating a commitment to longevity?).

True or not true?

Has anyone noticed a correlation in regards to domain names and how long into the future they have that name reserved? Or a corresponding jump in rankings or SERP when they've extended one for a substantial length of time? If so - how long a time must the extension be for?

I have 3 expiring in November and am trying to decide if it's OK to wait or not.

TIA!

Come again? Do you mean ARE they parked? The answer is no, they are all pointed to live sites.

Do domains continue to age while parked BTW?

Beth, I guess a dual meaning. 1. I was parked to read other comments that came in. 2. I actually have parked domains....so why not include that. Right?

Okay, I got on to see if anyone had commented but no one has given an answer so I am commenting so I can see if you get an answer.  I have heard that also but wasn't sure how many years you should go out.

I had always believed that aging matters.  New domains are sandboxed by google until they age and prove they aren't spam.  I have some aged domains that do very well.  The last website I started knowing that it would be months before any activity would occur.  I am able to get sites indexed  right away, but rank is a different animal.

How long you've registered your domain name into the future (5 years, 10 years, etc.) has no effect. It is not about a commitment to the future, but how long the site has been up and running in the past - showing it was not a spam site, just put up to make a quick buck.

From www.webconfs.com/age-of-domain-and-serps-article-6.php - "In the latest Google update that SEOs call the Jagger Update, some of the big changes seen were the importance given to age; age of incoming links, age of web content, and the date the domain was registered. Even though the domain's age is a factor, critics believe it only gets a little weight in the algorithm. Since the age of your domain is something you have no control over, it doesn't necessarily mean that your site isn't going to rank well in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). It does mean, however, that you will have to work harder in order to build up your site popularity and concentrate on factors that you can control, link inbound links and the type of content you present on your website."

What I find in practice is that the older the domain name and it's web site, the more frequently the searchbots may stop by to visit it. So a new site design with brand new content and good SEO techniques included OR the addition of a link directory may get noticed faster than a brand new domain name and site that the search engines are not familiar with yet.

Finally, merely holding onto a domain name that has never had a web site built for it will have virtually no effect on helping it suddenly achieve rankings just because a site was finally built. It only has impact in conjunction with the age of the web content that it displays and has displayed in the past.

As it happens I posted the same request on REliberation, and got a whole a number of answers, and some conflicting information.

When I get a moment, I will cross post some of them (or the info, anyway). It will probably be a couple of days, though as i will be out of town.
