I needed a picture of the American Flag for a Military Post.  I see so many nice flag photos here, so I went on a search.  I found some pretty nice ones, but they said no commercial, or had other restrictions.  Oh no....I just want it for a blog post.

American Flag   I just want a Picture of the Flag

I just want a picture....and most of the pictures are either overused, not free, or not available for commercial use.

Apparently  your Blogs are Commercial....so it's important to check before using the photo.  Some of them will let you use a photo for private use, but blogs aren't private ......as if we didn't know this :)

Solution to the Flag Dilemma....I took this picture...it's not the greatest, but hey it has stripes and the right amount of stars, it is blowing in the wind, and best of all it's mine.....I can do what I want with it !!!

I will be taking more pictures of flags as it's amazing how many times we might have need for a Flag Photo.   But for now I have this one....and that'll keep me from being busted for plagiarism, or copyright violations....:)

Blogging can be really difficult if you don't have the right Graphics....LOL :)

If you ever need another flag picture just let me know.  I have the flag waving in front of my home until our troops are home safe.

Good thought! I have been stock filing local photos but never really thought along these simple lines.

Great Picture!  It can be very challenging to find a good picture.

Kathy, you may not think your photo is the greatest, but we tend to be our own worst critics.  Your picture outclasses most of the ones I've seen on the net!  Good job!

Kathy great reminder.  I've been carrying around my camera and my flip video just in case.  I've got to find the time to upload them now.  It is important to stay out of blogger jail, so don't steal pictures.

If I can't take a photo of it then I use my subscription to IStock photo and IClip art to create it.  Sometimes it takes longer to get the photo's I want then it does to write the blog.

Kathy

I use Istockphoto.com which chares ( a little ) for thier photos but I also sometimes have great success with http://www.sxc.hu/ which has a lot of free photos.  Be sure to check the License before you download.  Certain uses are retricted...Also, try creative commons.

Kathy,

All I can tell you is if it ain't yours you take the chance of the owner contacting you to remove it if you didn't give credit to the owner. Even if it's a share photo they still could ask you to remove it so be careful if it's not yours. Ive been asked on two separate occiasions but I complied and they were cool after that.

Photobucket is free and you can use any photo that is public in any manner. I find lots of great stuff on there.

Kathy,
Yes, it can get complicated and "iffy".  Your flag looks good to me and now will you share it?  LOL!

Kathy, it is always a good idea to look at the license restrictions before using a photo. I've run into the same situation. Most photos cannot be used for blogging or commercial use. You've got the right idea. Take your own photos and use them.

Kathy,

For future images you can try office.microsoft.com/clipart.  The flag image you have now looks great though.  Best of luck.

Liz-I took a picture of this flag in the morning when I was going to check out a possible listing.  Dang....great picture, good lighting, and NO MEMORY CARD :(   Then I came back in the later afternoon and this is one of the ones I got......maybe I just liked the "one that got away"   LOL :)  I have a flip video now too but haven't used it yet....I will though for sure.  You're smart to take yours with you everywhere......

Robert- Why thank you.....I also saw you over on my Caterpillar Tree Post :)

Andy-You are right.....and I'll bet it helps if the camera has a memory card in it LOL :)

Bill- Yep, and sometimes it's not just the perfect picture that you think, but another one might just happen.  I have some very timely ones of fires and all sorts of things.

Trunda- Thanks....Having our own pictures keeps us out of trouble, even inadvertent trouble.

Randy-Thanks....there's a big Oak near me that has a bunch of flags, a makeshift memorial...that will be my next photo.....but you might want to get a picture of your flag anyway, and hey if yours is better than mine will you share..... LOL :)

Debbie- Oh how many times I needed just a simple thing.  I take most of my own photos that way I never worry....but sometimes you just can't.  I too have a stockpile of them, now I just need to get them better organized.

Carol- Have you looked at all the flag ones....wow it would blow your mind.  I spent hours looking, and trying to find a free one with no restrictions......and gave up :)

Howard- I think you are such a gentleman...that was a nice compliment :)

Cameron- Although I liked your feedback, (flip the flag around) I do not like all the advertising in your comment, plus the link to your site....totally against AR rules....therefore taken off my Post.  No offense.....just that it isn't in the spirit of blogging :)

Frank- Thanks...

Nannette-Hey thanks, and BTW I was talking to my friend and he knows a lot more of this techie stuff than me (technori) and he said he will try to help :)

Cindy- you said "sometimes it takes longer to get the photo than to write the Post"  boy is that the truth :)  I hadn't heard of IClip....thanks for the resources.

Amy- Both you and Cindy gave some good resources....with good advice "check the licenses" :)

Neal- you got contacted twice....ouch!  Well the good thing is you had 2 decent copyright owners, you could have had one that just wanted to "sue you" :)  Thanks for that real life advice it's greatly appreciated.

Laura- yes it's free but have you read all the terms....can you use the photos for commercial, and how about attribution to the photographer....sometimes I find that distracting to have to put all that info into my Post.  I haven't tried this site so I don't know....but I do know that in my search I went to many sites, and they didn't work for me.  Another consideration is  do I want the same photo as 100,000 other people :)  Just take our own, and solve the problem :)

Cynthia- I will share with you my Southern Friend, hey you have all those Military Posts...where do you get your flag photos?

Michael-Yep....and I was surprised.  How many times do we just click OK "I agree " :)  I'll bet there isn't a handful of people on here that have read every line on the Terms of Service....for any photo they got from the Internet.

Not signed in- yes, I have a great Military hat one from that site.....but again I don't want the same photo as everyone else:)

Sally-OK...we can start our own Photo Sharing...a select set of photos starting with all your best copyrighted Hawaiian ones LOL :)

Audrey-Take a deep breathe...1, 2,3.....now exhale :)  whining is not allowed in Maryland, it's a new rule that went into effect while you were on vacation LOL :)  You'll have Internet soon....and that's funny you thought I copied the picture to make a point....and how much of a fine is that point worth :)

Lisa- Oh yes...you never know when you need a lizard...or 2 :)  You have the right idea...we just never know what we may need :)  Hey I hope all is well with you.......

Cynthia- I have my plan to get several Flag photos....you have my permission (this is a public place right...so my public approval) to use any of my Flag Photos you might want.  I have the size on here, and a bigger size also :)

The only thing you can't have are the Lizards...those are my ticket to Lisa's house in New Orleans :)

Lisa-Yep...I remember being in the Military over in South Carolina for the Summer....hot wasn't the word, hot, humid and chiggers...that's what I remember.  Those are some lucky lizards if we have to wait LOL :)  I was half way to the car, and said wait I have to take more flag pictures for Cynthia, and finish my own land pictures for my new listings...dang I'll just have to wait for New Orleans :)  Put a picture here of the porch...that'll work for now ....thanks for the smile...it's really humid here today also, and miserable.

Hey, why don't you put it up on one of these photo sites and tell everyone to use it for anything and everything they want to, except maybe an article about how a person hates the US or a flag burning article unless they are against it!

Hi Kathy, I resigned myself long ago that the only safe way of providing photos is to either take them myself or buy them.

When I am out taking pictures, I note along the way objects or things that I might like to use in any post and take a good picture of it. When I sort the photos for downloading anything that might be used in a post or that I buy I categorize it in My Blogging Photos.

It is not the perfect answer for you but it is the one that works for me.

here is a tip: On any photo you take you can put through various photo editing programs and copyright it as your own  Copyright 2008 Kathy McGraw, as an example. It looks cool as well, :-) Don't copyright it to your company name in case one day you sell the company, they anything copyrighted to that name may go with the purchase unless you know to exclude it.

Why Hello My Canadian Friend, I like hearing that you had fun going to take your own photos of flags and stuff :)  There's a huge one a few towns away that I want to get, but the weather has to be just right :)  so nice to see you :)

Cindy-I haven't been to Istock...but will check them out, thanks.

Beautiful picture Kathy. Seems I had seen a post a few days back regarding graphics and where people find them. Will have to go back and see where it was.
