Confessions of a Gym Rat...It's Not Just for Men (part1)

By

Weight lifting is not just for men. It never was. It never will be.

I am a gym rat. I enjoy the smell of real iron dumbbells. When I lift weights, it feels like something Weight lifting"concrete" and satisfying. It's not a "concept" or an idea. It offers immediate satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment. It feels good. I feel good.

I would like to talk to women who have thought about lifting weights, but when it came right down to it, they looked at the dumbbells and the barbells and thought "Eek, not little ole me!" or "I have no idea what to do with them"....or..."I could never compete with the men"...or..."I will look stupid" ...or..."I might hurt myself"...or..."Women don't lift weights".

YES ...THEY DO!  And they do it very well.

I'd like to make a couple lot of points:

  • First - you have to get there. "There" being a gym, a fitness center, your home ...anywhere you can get your hands on some free weights.

  • You probably don't have enough time right? Well, yeah yeah yeah, blah blah blah. You can always find time for something you really want.

  • You don't want to look like a guy, right? Fat chance! Trust me, unless you have some amazing hereditary genes, you will not wake up looking like Arnold. Not even if you try. You don't build muscle by accident. It takes hard work.

  • You may want to just "spot reduce" or "tone your arms" or "flatten your belly". Sorry, but THERE IS NO SUCH THING. It's a total package. All or nothing. And while we are on the subject, what exactly is toning...or...sculpting? And why does it only apply to women? Phooey ... building muscle is building muscle. Period.

  • And while we are talking about building muscle....have you ever heard someone say, "Well, muscle weighs more than fat"? Which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks?

  • Women need muscle. We need strength and resistance training the older we get. It is one of the most important factors in building and keeping strong bones, good posture and balance. It counter acts the slump bumpy physique women tend to morph into as they age. It can even change the dreaded flat butt syndrome!

  • The more muscle you carry on your body, the more calories you burn. Even when you are sleeping! It's true. Your body becomes a calorie hoover. When you work hard in the gym, you tear down tiny muscle fibers. When you rest, they rebuild. Bigger and better than ever. (proper diet helps, but that's another story) Cardio is great. We need cardio for sure. But the moment you stop the activity, the calorie burning also stops. Calories burn like a furnace with weight lifting.

DO NOT fear the weights! I know. It's very difficult to walk into a weight room. Men can be intimidating. I'll tell you a little secret, most of the men are just as intimidated as you are. Really. They just have more macho testosterone causing them to grunt and groan and flail around like windmills. It doesn't mean they know what they are doing. They can't help it. Go easy on them.

This is a subject I am passionate about. I could go on and on. But I think I will do a part two instead. I'm sure you've had enough by now!

I think weight lifting is a great thing to do.  I work out 5 days a week, and really enjoy the satisfaction.  The most rewarding part is sticking with it and seeing your body change for the better.

All great points.  I plan to join the new gym around the corner by my home and my wife doesn't know she is in my plans also.

I love working with weights -- it also helps with building bone density.  It is a matter of not overdoing it as you point out.

As a former personal trainer and gym owner I agree with you 100%.  The excuse I used to get from women as their aversion to weights was, "I don't want to get all big and bulky." Well, ladies, you only get big and bulky if A. you eat a lot when you are training, or B. you're taking steroids.  The women I see on the women's fitness magazines are not big OR bulky.  Rather they are lean and atheletic.  Women also need to lift weights to offset osteoporosis, which is more prominent in women than men.

Regardless, weight lifting is healthy for anyone, men or women, if done properly.

You are right Sharon.  I love the part about burning calories while I sleep the best!. .....that's why I use my cute lil hot pink weights :)

oh - and a pound of bricks weighs the same as a pound of feathers.   Feathers are very light you know,  so it might take a bag full of them to make up that pound as oppossed to about 1/2 a brick :)

Chris ... *You* are the unfluffiest person I know!!!

Kara ..LOL  good try on the bag full of feathers

Jerry ... I am a former trainer too. It's so good to hear from someone of the same opinion. I don't know where women get these ideas. I WISH it were that easy to get big!

Joan ... I think women can benefit from weight training even more than men as we age progress through life

John ... congrats on the new gym membership. I hope you AND your wife enjoy!

Gary ... thanks. yup ... just do it. We can if we really want to, right?

David ... good for you! I admire the dedication. You obviously know the pay off!

Sharon,

We can do anything we put our minds to. I've been into physical fitness since the Marine Corps drilled it into my head when I was 19 yr old.  At age 39, I suffered a cervical spine injury. I had two vertebrae fused and about to have two more fused(now 41).  With direction from my Dr, I still lift weights, however I am limited to the amount of weight, but I do what I can.  I feel better when I work out. People can make excuses to avoid the things that are hard, but there's always a way to work out around your injuries.  You just have to be smarter then the weights & know your limits.

Sharon - Great post and yes lifting weights is for both genders, and I really like the idea of women keeping toned and looking a little buff.   But not to much!
